    16 February 1960

    Dear Crellie,

I found the research book 732 at home and the report number 3 and I have now asked Professor Corey if he would prepare the work on the preparation of these halo-genides for publication. I enclose a copy of a letter that I have sent to Herbert Harned. Corey wants to have a paper on these complexes published at about the same time as the paper on the x-ray work, so that reference to it can be made.

I do not know what the situation is about the bromide. I judge that Professor Corey is not sure that niobium bromide had been prepared, and unless you have got some additional evidence it may not be possible to say very much about it.

Please let me know if you are agreeable to having Professor Corey go ahead with the preparation of the paper, which would have you and Professor Harned and Professor Corey as joint authors.

    Much love from

    [Linus Pauling]

    22 February 1960

    Mrs. Richard E. Braach

    McHenry Valley Road

    Almond, New York

    Dear Mrs. Braach:

I am grateful to you for writing to me. I can assure you that I know the Bible quite well. I do not believe, however, that I have an immortal soul, as you have suggested in your letter. I think that if there is anything of value about me, it is my actions, here on this earth. With the support and encouragement of my wife, I am attempting to decrease the amount of suffering in the world. One way in which I am working is illustrated by my book No More War!, described on the accompanying sheet. You probably can get a copy of the book from your local library. Perhaps reading it would help you to get started out on the great spiritual adventure, that of working to benefit humanity and to prevent war.

    Sincerely yours,

Dictated by Professor Pauling. Signed in his absence:jh

    29 February 1960

    Dear Crellie,

I have told Dr. Corey that it is all right to go ahead with preparing the paper. Professor Harned also agreed.

Dr. Corey told me that he did not have a sample of the niobium bromide. If you do not have one, I suppose that it would be necessary to carry out the preparation again, and then to have the product analyzed. Possibly you would think it worth the while to do this sometime.

I caught a cold in St. Louis a couple of days ago. I had a speech to give also before the Rotary Club in Chicago, and I gave it and then took the plane home, and stayed in bed for a day and a half. Mama and I have since then had a few days at the ranch.

    Much love from

    [Linus Pauling]
