    Mr. William H. Stiles

    Science Editor

    News Office

    Harvard University

    Cambridge 38, Massachusetts

    Dear Mr. Stiles:

In answer to your letter of 27 August (the answer is delayed because I have been in Europe during the past six weeks), I am glad to tell you that, so far as I can remember, I first used the term "molecular disease" in print in a paper that I published, together with Drs. Itano, Singer, and Wells, in Science, 110, 543 (1949). This paper was on sickle-cell anemia. Unfortunately, the reprints are exhausted.

I enclose some reprints in which reference is made to this work.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:JH
