Dear Daddy ,
I regret I have not yet got the water calculations finished, but I am on the last lap. I shall send them off immediately they are done.
Could you please advise us a little of your summer itinerary? You will be here around the 15th of September. Are you going to the Biochemical do in Vienna at the beginning of September?
I must be in Glascow on August 29th which may turn out to be annoying. I should like to go to Vienna to keep my hand in biochemical state of the art.
If you have some idea, could you please advise when you will be here? I should like to be here at the same time. We shall try to go away for a holiday since we have not had one for a year and a half.
April, 1958
Thank you for your letter which I am pleased to receive and for your and Mamma's offer to help us. I shall wait for a while before deciding what to say,
I am afraid we are too late to get David Green. I think his negotiations with Alex Rich have progressed so far that he feels that he cannot break them. I should have thought faster.
Ian Bush has a Ph.D. in physiology or biochemistry. He got it before qualifying in medicine and I do not think he wants any more degrees. I think it unlikely he could come to Pasadena, and he probably should not leave Oxford. He has a number of offers in America, at Cornell, Salt Lake City and so forth, at more than $10,000 a year I think, and if he goes he should take one of these. He has just begun at Oxford, though, with his own lab and his wife does not wish at all to leave. He and his wife, nee Alison Pichard, visited you in the summer of 1953 I guess. She is the sister of Joy Jonckheere, who has just spent a few months with Anita in Honolulu.
I expect I should go to the Faraday Society meeting on Ions of the Transition Elements in Dublin from the 9th until 11th of September. We are trying to arrange a holiday in May or June, sitting in the sun in a shack. I think we shall Not get to Vienna.
I shall finish the water calculations on Tuesday, and shall send them off to you. Have the drawings been changed? I shall write, out my suggestions for them and send them, and my suggested changes to the paper. Some of the atoms have been left out of the drawings.
When are you coming to Europe? Perhaps we should all go lie in the sun, though. I suppose you are too busy. We want to go early in the summer when it is not too hot. You should try to rest here a little and not rush around too much.
Love from
Peter
