    Colonel Irving L. Branch

    Department of Defense

    Armed Forces Social Weapons Project

    Washington 25, D.C Ref: SWPEF-3/921

    Dear Colonel Branch:

I am very much interested to read your letter of 22 May 1957, about the problem of long-range effects of ionizing radiation administered in doses which are usually defined as sub-lethal and small. I agree with you that this is part of a very broad problem in fundamental biology - a problem about which I have been thinking for some time.

I would indeed be glad to talk with three officers from your headquarters, as mentioned in your letter - Lt. Colonel Thomas J. White, Commander Charles H. Fugitt, and Lieutenant Joseph S. Garrison III. Unfortunately I am leaving in three days for Europe, where I am to attend several international scientific conferences and to give scientific talks in a number of universities. I shall not return to the United States until the end of August.

I regret the delay that this European trip necessitates, and hope that you will feel that a meeting can be arranged in the fall of the year.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W

Shannon, National Institutes of Health, RE: Writes that he does not have any strong feelings about the publication of his lecture, but feels that it was mostly a recapitulation of already-published material and the style of the lecture might not be best for a transcript.
