  Dear Frank:

  Your letter of March 2 has remained in Santa Barbara, awaiting our return from New York, a few days ago.

  I hope that you have not been caused any trouble by my failure to answer, and especially to give you permission to use Figures 4 and 5 which I give with pleasure.

  The problem of whether or not there is a synergistic effect of two anesthetic agents of different types is not a simple one — that is, the theory is not simple.

  I think that several different predictions would be made, corresponding to several different cases. One case is that of small molecules, such as xenon, that can fit into either one of the two kinds of cavities in a Type-I crystal. As a first approximation I would predict that in this case anesthesia would occur (in 50% of the animals) when the sum of the partial pressures of the two substances divided by the AD 50 equaled a constant value.

  Another case would be that of a small molecule capable of fitting into either of the two cavities and a larger molecule fitting into only the larger cavity in a Type-I crystal. I am not sure what the prediction is in this case, but I think that it would not be quite the same.

  Still a third case is that of a small molecule, such as xenon, that can fit into the smaller cavity in either Type-I or Type-II crystals, and a large molecule, such as chloroform, that fits in the large cavity in only the Type-II crystal. I think that the predicted effect would be different for the xenon-excess range than for the chloroform-excess range. Presumably a small partial pressure of chloroform would have no value, no change, in the presence of a large partial pressure of xenon, but a small amount of xenon would have an effect in the presence of a large amount of chloroform. There are, of course, other combinations that could be considered, with different predictions, too.

  You may be interested to know that Ava Helen and I discussed the possibility of asking you to come to New York to be a character witness for me in the libel suit, but decided that it was not necessary.

  I am pleased to report that your handling of the dishwasher problem has remained completely.

  We haven't been at the ranch for over two months and do not yet know how the wiring of the refrigerator is holding out. I haven't yet replaced the wire to the grind stone, but do not expect to have any trouble with it.
