Sunday 25 January 1959
Dear Mamma,
Thank you for the pleasant stay with you and for all the good things like Pecan Rolls. I am sorry I left so much behind like that box and my shoes and several small things. I just couldn’t get them in. If you have not posted the box with Vacuum Cleaner yet you might add “Box 10” to the address. I think it does not matter very much.
I am getting along all right, though running out of clean shirts and socks. There is a lot of work to do; I do not know how I would get it all done if Julia and Thomas were here. We are having entrance examinations and interviews just now; a lot of extra work.
I had a good trip over. I had three seats on the plane to New York, though just next the engines. The jet over the Atlantic was good fun. 6 X 45! I arrived at 10:00 pm. I got home about 12:30.
It is now Sunday 8 February, 1959. I regret the delay in my completing this letter.
I am getting a lot of work done. It is much easier to work hard without Julia and Thomas here. I am staying out late and am here only to sleep. I eat in town and work in the lab. I am really pleased to get a chance to catch up.
Julia and Thomas should be through pretty soon. The worst of the weather will be over soon here. It has been bloody and I am glad they were not here. Terrible fogs.
Julia can post my shoes when she comes. I have been wearing one pair of those boots and am pleased to have them in the winter. I am sure it is good treatment for Julia to stay for awhile in Honolulu.
I went to the National Gallery yesterday. Magnificent place. Very excited about a Botticelli Madonna.
I like all our wooden spoons. Very much fun. I must try to get a vase or bowl to hold them. I have not really been into town since getting back. I shall go. I am pleased now to have central heating. It makes the place bearable.
xxxooo
Love from Peter
