Dear Crellin,
We are in this most beautiful of houses, with an English couple to look after us, so life is, as I had hoped, restful and delightful. Still occasional upset stomach, but I expect it to clear up in time.
I wrote Arletta about a few things that should be done, esp. since I just may not be getting back until almost first Sept; that seems a bit late, but I could return with Linus - my trip over was so boring. I didn't know what to do with so much time. Also can get more rested, but will have so much to do that last week, so many thank you notes, etc. Much has to wait for Mama anyway.
First, in a bag in plain view on the lower shelf of my closet, to the left, are Mother's shoes she wanted dyed, and I couldn't take that last day for the shops were closed. I left the piece of material with Arletta, for she had wanted to see what her dress would be like. Could you get them, either take them to A. or get the material from her and take both to the Shoe repair store on So. California St. next to Alvins (Huggins said they thought they could dye them) and have them dyed the blue of the darkest blue of the material. I don't want to leave that till the last moment. Thank you.
Also, if you would phone, or have Arletta do it, the Marie Antoinette shop (this I forgot to do) and have them be sure of the date when we will be wanting cake, or cakes for 200 say (I counted, bet there will be 200, 225 at the most). Mama and I can order them definitely later, the decoration, etc, but I wanted them to plan. Speak to Mr. Stewart. Perhaps he remembered the date.
I prob. won't get home in time to get the wedding ring, which you will have to do; don't lose it! I enclose $50, in case you decide you don't have enough money in the bank, for I'm sure Osaki should be paid when you get it. I have no idea of the cost. Has that plumber's bill come? Unless you phone up and get their okay not to pay it until later (they prob. won't like that) you had better send it on. Vasbinder Vromans has a charge account, so that should be all right to leave.
Also Mrs. McGill re: the house, in case she finds someone - I left all decisions up to her, although she could phone if necessary - 991558 - if she does decide to open escrow surely she will need the papers, in the folder in the large Letters holder also on the shelf in closet. Perhaps you should phone her - see card on bulletin board - ask her if anything has happened. You could act as advisor. She was asking $16,900 I think; $500 for the furniture, and I hope to hell she can sell that, although I must be content if she can't. She will get 5% commission. The business cannot be closed until B. comes back to sign papers, anyway. I hope you are remembering the twins, and that they are continuing all right. Thank you for your help.
In case Max Delbruck and party wish to stop at Ranch, he would have to get in touch with you to be sure Luther knows of it to give them keys. I'd just as soon they didn't when I'm not there (I had thought to be there) and prob. they won't.
I guess that is all. I hope you phoned the swimming pool co. and worked everything out; also that the cleaners came, were good, and not too expensive. What about pay for them? I can always write a check for them if need be. Could you send me two yellow checks, please, if you have them, to keep me until I get home (in case I need them.) I have only one left, and could write the bank but prob. would take ages.
You could prob. always borrow a couple of hundred dollars from someone if necessary for a week or two.
I hope all is going well. So far no sailing, but I hope this afternoon.
Love, Linda
P. S. Could you perhaps get me an appointment with Dr. Whipple to have my teeth cleaned and just generally checked? Aug. 30 or the first week of September. Merci beaucoup.
