    Dear Mamma,

I thought I would write and thank you for the wonderful Christmas we had with you, and for bringing us to California so that we could visit you. It was certainly wonderful to be with you. I hope you have now recovered and are well again.

We are moved as you know. It is much nicer, but rather far out. Not many people will come to see us I think. Bookshelves are really all I need, and I expect to get some fairly soon. Thomas and Julia are well and kicking. We left our double boiler in the toy closet; perhaps we shall get one here. We live in a nest of Americans and perhaps we can arrange some shopping.

    Thank you again.

    love from

    Peter

    4 Feb. 1957

Subject: Phenylalanine in the differentiation of neutral crest cells

Professor Campbell has pointed out to me that there is a paper “The Role of Phenylalanine in the Differentiation of Neural Crest Cells,” by Charles E. Wilde, Jr., in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 60, 1015 (1955), that may be of interest to us.

Wilde has carried out tissue culture studies of cells of salamander embryos, in the presence of various substances related to phenylalanine. A number of phenylalanine analogs were found to exert an inhibitory effect on the differentiation of neuroepithelium and somite cells. One inhibitor, orthofluorophenylalanine, was found to be competitive with phenylalanine, in that the inhibition was found to be removed by the presence in the medium of an equimolal amount of phenylalanine. The author concludes that phenylalanine is essential for neural crest differentiations.

    5 February 1957

    Mr. Peter Pauling

Flat 24, Whitehall Lodge Pages Lane,

Maswell Hill London N. 10, England

    Dear Peter:

I am glad to learn about your new flat. I hope that it turns out to be thoroughly satisfactory.

I have continued to work on the water problem, and I hope that I can settle down this afternoon to writing a preliminary draft of the paper - I think that almost everything that can be done effectively at the present time on the problem has been done. I have formulated another face-centered close-packed structure of dodecahedra with density 1.00, and with a number of contacts at 3.6 Å. It involves some deformation of the dodecahedra, probably not un-reasonably large. I shall send you a copy of the rough draft of the paper when it is ready, in order that you may send comments and advice.

I should like to have you buy a microscope for me, of the sort discussed in your letter. I have thought for some time that I should have a microscope of my own, for use in some phases of my work, later on, and I am willing to have you get one now, and to use it during the remainder of your stay in England. I enclose my check for $300. Please let me know the exact cost of the microscope, after you have bought it.

Mama and I spent four days at Deer Flat Ranch a couple of weeks ago. We are planning to go up again in another week and to stay for about ten days.

    Love from

    [Linus Pauling]
