  • Letter from A.O. Dekker, Aerojet-General Corporation, to LP RE: Confirms his invitation for LP to speak to the Aerojet Branch of RESA on July 13. LP may choose his own subject, bearing in mind the interests of a group composed of chemists, physicists, engineers, and their wives. In June, will inform LP of the meeting place. [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.19]
  • Letter from Dr. Herman Lehmann, Pathology Dept., St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, to LP RE: Wonders if LP saw the article in Science, published March 18, which describes a new hemoglobin called H. Lehmann is suspicious of it. Gives updates regarding his study of hemoglobin in various peoples of the world. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (L: Correspondence, 1955-1960), #231.1]
  • Letter from Dr. Martin Kamen, Washington University, to Dr. Arthur H. Compton, RE: Describes details of the trial. • Letter from LP to A.C. Parekh, India, RE: Explains that there is no one working toward a doctorate in biochemistry in Caltech's Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Some work in biochemistry is carried on in the Division of the Biological Sciences, under the direction of Professor Borsook. Suggests that Parekh obtain his advanced degree in an Indian institution or another American institution. Then perhaps Parekh could come to Caltech as a post-doctoral research man. [Letter from Parekh to LP March 16, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #313.3]
  • Letter from LP to Col. T.A. Clark RE: Does not know enough about meteorology to say whether the bomb explosions in Nevada influenced the off-season cold wave that damaged crops in the south. Does not think that anyone knows enough about meteorology to say confidently that atomic bomb explosions do not affect the weather. [Letter from Clark to LP April 1, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Correspondence, 1921-1957), #74.23]
  • Letter from LP to David Resnick, President, United Inventors and Scientists of America, RE: Pleased to be invited to serve as a member of the United Inventors and Scientists of America's National Board of Directors. Regrets that he cannot accept the invitation because he is overburdened with other activities. Thanks Resnick for his congratulations regarding the Nobel Prize. [Letters from Resnick to LP April 1, 1955, April 12, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (R: Correspondence, 1955-1959), #341.1]
  • Letter from LP to Dean Frank R. Kille, Carleton College, RE: Regrets to say that he cannot accept the invitation for a semester's residence as a guest professor at Carleton College. Has already committed to spending a few months away from Pasadena in the coming academic years and believes that his teaching and research would suffer if he were to take any further periods of leave in the near future. [Letter from Kille to LP April 1, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (K: Correspondence, 1936-1956), #200.20]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Bernard Pullman, Faculty of Sciences, Institut du Radium, RE: Pleased to learn that Pullman and his wife plan to be in the U.S. in December and that they would like to visit Pasadena. Invites each of them to deliver a seminar talk. The talks could be given either before December 15 or after January 2. The Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering will pay for their room and board. Requests that Pullman write to Dr. E.W. Hughes, giving him the titles of the two talks. Pullman can discuss the time of the seminars with Hughes. [Letters from Pullman to LP March 30, 1955, April 20, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #313.3]

    7 April 1955

    Professor Fred Allen

    Purdue University

    Lafayette, Indiana

    Dear Fred:

I am pleased to have received your letter today. I shall hasten to answer it, because Ava Helen and I are leaving on Sunday, on a week's trip east. Perhaps I shall see you in June anyway - I am looking forward to being there at the dedication of your new building.

We had a fine time on the trip around the world. I got back to find the galley proofs waiting for me, and now I shall have page proofs to read while we are back east. Also, Ava Helen will have to make out the index.

I am pleased at the prospect of your being here next year, for part of the year.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling :W

  • Letter from LP to Dr. Gladys A. Anslow, Physics Dept., Smith College RE: Thanks Anslow for her invitation to visit Smith College laboratories. Regrets to say that he will be unable to attend, due to his busy lecture schedule at Harvard and the dedication of the chemistry building at Mount Holyoke. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Correspondence: 1931, 1936-1957), #12.21]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Seymour L. Shapiro, RE: Pleased to have read Shapiro's letter to Henry Luce. Seems that Shapiro's proposal to pay scientists to "Think About Cancer" is reasonable and might lead to worthwhile results. [Letter from Shapiro to LP March 26, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. W. Foerst, Heidelberg, Germany, RE: Pleased to learn that Helfferich has completed the translation of General Chemistry and that Foerst plans to send the galley proofs to LP. Sends Foerst's request list of original figures to Freeman. Willing for the book to be titled, "Chemie, eine Einfuhrung." Did not have a replacement made for Figure 30-4. Will write a preface for the German edition. [Letter from Foerst to LP March 30, 1955, Letter from LP to Freeman April 7, 1955] [Filed under LP Books: (General Chemistry: An Introduction to Descriptive Chemistry and Modern Chemical Theory, Second Edition), #1953b.2]
  • Letter from LP to Per Hallvard Nilsen, Chemical Engineer, Chemical Products Division, Sarpsborg, Norway, RE: Does not agree with Nilsen's values for the resonance energies of aldol and DHD. Believes there is no reason for them to have resonance energies at all. Nilsen's reaction A might indeed be more exothermic than it is as calculated from bond energies, since the hydroxyl group and the aldehydic oxygen atom would be expected to form a hydrogen bond. Agrees that the bond energies predict the reaction B should be endothermic. Bonds energies for double bonds are not very reliable, but LP is still surprised that Nilsen found such a great discrepancy. [Letter from Nilsen to LP March 30, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (N: Correspondence), #287.22]
  • Letter from LP to Professor E.W. Pfeiffer, RE: Thanks Pfeiffer for the clipping that he sent. LP was also disturbed by the David Lawrence article and by an article about radioactivity that was published in U.S. News and World Report. Believes that either the writers or the publishers of that work were attempting to mislead the public. Encloses a copy of the release that he prepared for some television showings and a reprint of Professor Sturtevant's recent article. [Filed under LP Peace: (Materials, re: Fallout and Radiation Shelters, and Civil Defense, 1954-1961), Box #7.007, Folder #7.1]
  • Letter from LP to Professor Hermann O. L. Fischer, Virus Laboratory, University of California at Berkeley, RE: Continuing x-ray diffraction studies of crystalline peptides and other simple substances related to proteins. Requests small samples of specific peptides. [Letter from Fischer to LP April 20, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (F: Correspondence, 1935-1956), #128.20]
  • Letter from LP to W.H. Freeman, W.H. Freeman and Company, Publishers, RE: Requests that Freeman send Foerst the originals of the figures on the enclosed list. These figures are not needed for the new edition of College Chemistry. [Letter from LP to Foerst April 7, 1955, Letter from Foerst to LP June 20, 1955] [Filed under LP Books: (General Chemistry: An Introduction to Descriptive Chemistry and Modern Chemical Theory, Second Edition), #1953b.2]
  • Letter from Prof. G. Liljestrand, Karolinska Institutets, Nobelkommitté, Stockholm, to LP RE: Enclosed proofs of Nobel lecture, speech at Nobel banquet and curriculum vitae for "Les Prix Nobel en 1954," requesting corrections and inquiring number of reprints LP would like. [Filed under LP Awards: 1954h2.17]
