    Miss Talitha Gerlach

    China Welfare Appeal Inc.

    Friendship Cargo for China

    439 Fourth Avenue

    New York 16, N. Y.

    Dear Miss Gerlach:

On the occasion of the recent visit in Pasadena of Dr. Arthur Chung, member of the Medical Committee and Board of Directors of the China Welfare Appeal, I was pleased to be able to make the effort to be of some service to him and to the China Welfare Appeal.

My colleagues and I have in recent years developed a promising substitute for blood plasma. This material, Oxypolygelatin, can be manufactured cheaply and with use of equipment readily available. In the hope that it might be of some value in the department [?] of disease and of wounded persons in China, I was glad to be able to turn over to Dr. Chung a sample of the material, and a detailed description of its method of manufacture.

With my best wishes to you for great success in your fine work, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Dictated by Linus Pauling

    Signed in his absence:W

P.S. Please forgive me for having been so slow to answer your letter. L.P.

    cc: Dr. Fritchman
