Dear Frank:
I thank you for your letter of July 11, with its advice about the procedure in selecting the subject of my Oxford lectures.
I am writing now to say that, as my wife has thought more about the matter of our lodging in Oxford, she has become more strongly convinced that it would be better for us, under the circumstances that probably will prevail, to live in a hotel or similar establishment than to have the obligation of running our own household. We are accordingly perfectly satisfied with the proposal that we not live in Eastman House.
There is one suggestion which I would like to make, for the consideration of the Eastman Trust. It is that it would be fine if an automobile could be purchased by the Eastman Trust and made available to the Eastman Professor during his stay in England, under whatever financial arrangement seems best. For example, I would be willing to pay the cost of the automobile, with the plan of leaving it for the next Eastman Professor, receiving in return a sum equal to its estimated value at that time. I know that it is possible to travel around England conveniently by train, but I would like to have the opportunity of getting the more intimate contact with the English people and countryside that travel by automobile would permit.
Helen and I are looking forward to seeing you and Mrs. Aydelotte next month.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
