Dear M. Gallais:
I was interested to read your paper on the relation between strength of acids and bases and electronegativity of the element.
I think that the relation that you point out has validity for the case where the number of hydrogen atoms equals the number of oxygen atoms, and I am very glad to learn about your observation.
A few years ago, in a text book which I wrote for use by our students (my course in general chemistry), I pointed out a simple rule connecting the strength of an oxygen acid with the difference between the number of oxygen atoms and the number of hydrogen atoms. I do not have available an extra copy of this book, but I shall publish the rule in a short while, and send you a copy of the manuscript at that time, or perhaps an excerpt from my general chemistry text.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
