I have been very interested to read the list from publishers regarding the prices of books comparable to our Monographs and also the comments of the members of the Editorial Board. The study of these suggests that there is much justification for attempting to have the prices of the Monographs, on the average, decreased very much, and I agree with Dr. Clark that the primary function of the Editorial Board is to keep the quality of the Monographs high. Nevertheless I feel that it might be wise for selected Monographs to be published at a lower cost per page than the average and for the Editorial Board to make recommendations to the publishers regarding manuscripts which it is felt will have a wide sale. I might suggest that consideration be given the possibility of your requesting the members of the Board to indicate classification of a Monograph as A, B, or C while voting in favor of publication or against publication.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
