Letter from Linus Pauling to Charles E. Weir. February 1, 1956

Pauling comments on a manuscript sent by Dr. Weir. He first suggests the idea of including the effect of radius ratio into the discussion. Pauling corrects Weir's claim that irregular density behavior for anions and cations around atomic number 20 has not been discussed previously by stating that the irregular behavior has been discussed for the past 30 years. He analyzes Weir’s attempt to relate principle quantum numbers and lattice spacing, deeming it unnecessary. Pauling likewise expresses similar conclusions in regards to Weir’s discussion of complex energy cycles. He concludes his evaluation by expressing his dissatisfaction with Weir's experimental methods.  View Transcript
