Biographical / Historical Notes
There is a history of poultry related groups merging and renaming themselves prior to the establishment of the Oregon Poultry Industries Association. Records from these precursors are in the collection as well. Within the OPIA Records are materials for the Oregon Poultry and Pet Stock Association (established 1909), Oregon Poultrymen's Association (established 1924, dissolved 1948), Pacific State Butter, Egg, Cheese, and Poultry Association, the Oregon branch of the International Baby Chick Association, Pacific Cooperative Poultry Producers (established 1920 with the expansion of the Oregon Poultry Producers Association), and the Oregon Egg Distributors (a representative group of the Oregon Poultry Council).
The OPIA has roots in the incorporation of the Oregon Baby Chick Association in 1946. The association changed name to Oregon Poultry Hatchery Association in 1953, and again in 1956 when they merged with the Oregon Poultry Improvement Association they changed their name to the Oregon Poultry and Hatchery Association. This group ceased to be a corporation in 1960 when they didn’t file fees or a registered address with the state.
The Oregon Poultry Industries Association was established September 1972 when the Oregon Poultry Hatchery Association changed its name and registered as a non-profit in the State of Oregon.
