Dearest Linie:
I cannot tell you the feeling that the Daddy and I had when we returned to Santa Barbara last evening and saw that you had accompanied a delegation from Hawaii to the march in Selma. We had not known anything about it, of course, and in one way I am glad for I am afraid I should have been a bit worried. We are happy that you did go and we think this is an important way to improve conditions for everyone. Dr. King had sent a telegram to the Daddy asking him to take part in the march, but we were just too busy to go and, moreover, I think that the Daddy perhaps has done his share of marching.
We did take part in the march here in Santa Barbara previously and were quite impressed by the fact that so many Catholics, fathers and nuns, were a part of the march.
It is certain that the house will by no means be complete by April. There has had to be some redoing of certain parts because of errors made which Papa thought he could not overlook.
I talked with Linda last evening and she said she had talked with you over the telephone and that you planned to stay only a very short time at the ranch. I am wondering if it is worthwhile to take that 12-hour trip with your children, who will already be rather weary from their long journey, for only a night? You are welcome, of course, but I think we ought to be realistic. The children from Palo Alto will be disappointed if they don't see your children, but if we can plan certainly for our family reunion in the summer and a genuine housewarming, then I don't think there will be too much disappointment.
Perhaps you would consider taking your boys to the ranch and leaving the rest of the family in Pasadena or perhaps here in Santa Barbara.
I am giving a talk at the Church on the eleventh of April and then I was foolish enough to say I would talk to the combined societies of Jewish women on the fourteenth. I had thought we would just all stay in Pasadena until after that date and then all go together to the ranch but Linda said this is not your plan now.
We can prepare things in Pasadena and let you go up by yourself if you wish, and I am sure that you will enjoy looking at the house. The wildflowers are absolutely magnificent now and I think they still will be towards the end of April. The fields of blue Lupine look just like the sea and of course there are many other things and also lovely poppies which will be even better a little later.
I feel sorry for the Daddy because he thought by turning this house over to an architect and to Gus Albrecht we would not need to pay any attention until the time came to move in. This was a great fallacy and I think that even Gus has proved to be not as capable as the Daddy had thought. He is much too easy going and of course is not really interested in what he is doing now. You know he is a great musician and knows a great deal about music both emotionally and intellectually and from the standpoint of physics.
We had a dear note from Romona and I look forward to seeing the children, but I want to do what is best for them and for you all.
We send you much love and look forward to seeing you too. We tried to call you last evening but you had not yet arrived, although there was great excitement in your household, and they were making preparations for a grand welcome ceremony.
Best love,
