  • Letter from Bertrand Russell to LP, RE: Russell thanks LP for his letter. He says that he received a letter this morning from Professor Glass which he does not find at all satisfactory. He is, in response, sending a fresh letter to the Bulletin, and has enclosed a copy for LP. [Filed under: LP Safe Contents, Drawer 2, Folder 2.002]
  • Letter from Bertrand Russell to the Editor, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, RE: Russell informs the editor that he wrote a letter to the Bulletin concerning Professor Glass's criticism of Dr. Pauling, but that it was never published. He hopes that this letter will be. He goes on to recap the statements made by Professor Glass against LP, and points out that Glass's lack of facts makes LP singularly unable to defend himself. The fact that the Bulletin has neglected to print any facts (despite requests for them) is intolerable, and Russell believes that LP is suffering a grave injustice. 8 April 1963

    Professor Sidney W. Benson

    Chemistry Department

    University of Southern California

    Los Angeles 7, California

    Dear Sidney:

I was interested to see your paper as abstracted by the American Chemical Society.

I do not have enough background in kinetics to form a judgment about your statements. You mention an upper limit of 38.3 kcal/mole for the bond dissociation energy of B2H6, and possible lower limits of 35 and 32, on the basis of assumptions about a rate of recombination.

What do you think can be said definitely about the lower limit? You probably know that on page 369 of The Nature of the Chemical Bond I have given an argument leading to the value of 23.9 kcal/mole.

    I notice that on page 365 I have a reference to Bauer, Shepp, and McCoy, J.A.C.S. 75, 1003 (1953), who give 32 + 2 kcal/mole for the bond energy.

I think that my argument for 23.9 is not very reliable, and I should like to know what you think the correct value is.

    Cordially yours,

    Linus Pauling:lh
