    5 September 1959

    Dear Peter,

I enclose a reprint of my speech on the Structure of Water given in Ljubljana.

A few weeks ago, I think it was when we were in Japan, I began thinking about the radial distribution curve that you have calculated, and wondering whether the oxygen-hydrogen terms had been included. I think that it would be well worth while for you to check up on this point. Perhaps these oxygen-hydrogen terms would make enough change in the distribution function to permit a somewhat different interpretation of the calculations to be made than we had thought possible.

The principal peaks are at about 3.2 and 3.75 . The first of these might possibly be important enough to explain the shift of the first peak above 2.76, and the second may also be significant.

Mama and I are setting off tomorrow for the ranch, where we shall stay about three days, and then drive to Oregon for a few days, in order that I may give talks in Ashland, Portland, and Salem on science in the modern world, as part of the Centennial celebration of statehood. Then we shall stop for a few days again in the ranch, and be home about 22 September.

Crellin is going to go to the University of Washington. I think that the department that he will be in is called the Department of Medical Genetics.

    Much love from

    Dictated by Professor Pauling

    Signed in his absence:jh
