  Subject: The sigma phase

  I think that I have worked out a structure of the sigma phase. It is based on the orthorhombic unit proposed by Mr. Paul Pietrokowsky as reported in your communication of May 12, 1950. This is an orthorhombic cell with dimensions a_o = 8.661, b_o = 6.214, and c_o = 5.199 kx with 12 atoms in the unit cell. You mention that the hko’s are present only with h even. I am not sure that this is compatible with my structure.

  With these units, the parameters of the 12 atoms are the following: [List of x, y and z parameters]

  Your communication to me said that there were 12 FeCr in the unit cell; that is, 24 atoms. The other 12 atoms are to be centered around ½ ½ ½ in the same way that these are located around 000. A glide plane is necessary in order to preserve orthorhombic symmetry; but the glide plane must transfer a point at 000 into a point at ½ ½ ½. I judge that it must be a diagonal glide.

  Would you determine the coordinates of the other 12 atoms, by introducing a suitable symmetry element, in such a way that no 2 atoms are closer than about 2.5 Å. Would you also evaluate all interatomic distances - I have not carried out this part of the work in detail.

  This seems to me to be a very nice structure. In fact, it looks so good to me that I feel reasonably sure that Pietrokowsky’s unit is the correct one. I think that the next thing to do, after you have checked the structure, is to calculate intensities. However, I would like to see the coordinates of all of the atoms. I think it would be a good idea to have a model made – perhaps you could put one together, using the technique of stringing small wooden balls on vertical rods. It may be that we should change the parameters a little bit from the values that I have calculated as the first set.

  If this does turn out to be the right structure I shall be pretty pleased.

  My wife and I had a pleasant trip home. We spent a day at the Petrified Forest National Monument in Arizona. We remember with much pleasure our visit with you in New Orleans.

  Since getting home I have worked out a staple theory of the interaction of sodium and potassium in the flame photometer. First, I have checked some old experimental work by H. A. Wilson, described in a paper in 1922 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society by H. A. Wilson and A. A. Noyes, from which it is evident that the electrons in the flame are due almost entirely to the ionization of the sodium and potassium atoms.

  We may assume that in a flame containing both sodium and potassium there are present sodium atoms in various states (the normal state and various excited states), potassium atoms in various states, sodium ions, potassium ions, and electrons. The distribution of the unionized sodium atoms among the various states is a function of the temperature, but not of the amount of sodium or potassium present. This means that the intensity of the sodium radiation can be taken as proportional to the number of sodium atoms in the normal state and all the various excited states, provided that the temperature remains constant. The same thing is true for potassium. However, there is an equilibrium between the unionized sodium and sodium ions and electrons. This can be expressed by the equation

  The equilibrium constant for this equation can be taken as K1, which is given by the equation

  The total amount of sodium, [Na_t], is equal to the unionized sodium plus the sodium Ions, [Na] + [Na⁺]. Similarly the total amount of potassium, [Kt ] is equal to [K] + [K⁺]

  Electrical neutrality requires that the concentration of electrons be equal to the sum of the concentrations of sodium ion and potassium ion:

  Now let us introduce I₁, the intensity of the sodium lines, as proportional to the number of unionized sodium atoms, that is,

  We also introduce a similar expression for I₂, the intensity of the potassium line.

  Now by manipulating the quantities, we can derive an equation for the total amount of sodium and for the total amount of potassium in terms of the intensities of the sodium line and the potassium line. This equation is the following:

  We can derive a similar expression for the total amount of potassium.

  Not having the observed intensities at hand for your experiments, but instead the apparent amounts of sodium and potassium given by mixtures of the two, making use of the calibrations with sodium alone or potassium alone, I have changed this equation somewhat, for comparison with experiments. Namely, I have replaced I₁ in the equation by the apparent concentration of sodium, and I₂ by the actual concentration of potassium which was added. Similarly in the equation for the total amount of potassium I replaced I₁ in the correction term by the actual amount of sodium that was added.

  It turns out that one can in this way develop an equation that agrees moderately well with your experimental data - better than agreement between the experiments reported in columns 3 and 4. I have not spent much time in an effort to get the best agreement, but I have found that for the experiments in which you had a large amount of added sodium with relatively small amounts of potassium the following equation works reasonably well:

  For example, in the series in which the actual potassium, concentration was 0.200 milliequivalents per liter and the sodium concentration varied from 0 to 50 milliequivalents per liter, the values of K

  were found to vary From 0.200 to 0.515. When corrected by this equation, the values all lie Between 0.19 and 0.22 milliequivalents per liter. With 1.2 milliequivalents per liter of potassium actually present, the sodium concentration varying between 0 and 50 milliequivalents per liter, the apparent values ranged from 1.21 to 1.65 milliequivalents per liter. When corrected by this same equation, the apparent values ranged from 1.19 and 1.23. I think that similar agreement would be obtained for the other values in your table. Also a similar equation can be used to correct the values from the sodium determination in the presence of added potassium.

  I would like you to make some calculations for me by the method described in a paper by L. Pauling and G. W. Wheland, J. Chem. Phys., 1, 362 (1933). I am interested in having calculations of the resonance energy in some free radicals made, similar to those reported in Table III, and using the method described on the preceding page. This calculation is made by considering only unexcited structures; the structures were all given equal weights. But I believe that this is sufficiently good for the purpose.

  The free radicals for which I would like these calculations made are the following:

  1. The radical obtained from a methyl radical, CH₃, by replacing one hydrogen by the butadiene group. In this radical there are 5 significant carbon atoms in a chain. We can describe the structure by placing a double bond between carbon atoms 1 and 2, then a single bond, then a double bond, then a single bond to the last carbon atom, which has a free valence on it. This would be carbon atom number 5. The free valence could, however, be on carbon atom number 3, or on carbon atom number 1, with the double bonds in other positions. The calculations are made by use of a phantom orbital to which the free valence is formally connected.

  2. A benzene ring, with a chain of 3 carbon atoms attached, there being a double bond between the first carbon atom and the second carbon atom, and a free valence on the third carbon atom. This free valence can move on to the first carbon atom or into any one of

  three positions in the benzene ring, by redistributing the four double bonds. There are thus seven structures altogether, the factor 2 coming in for each of the structures in which the free valence is in the side chain.

  3. A naphthalene molecule in which carbon atom number 2 is not considered. The free valence can then be on carbon atom number 1, there being a double bond between carbon atoms 2 and 3 and a completed benzene ring, or in any one of several other positions.

  4. Two benzene rings attached to the same carbon atom. The free valence can be on the central carbon atom, or in any one of three positions in either of the two benzene rings.

  5. A biphenyl group with a carbon atom attached to one of the ortho carbon atoms in one of the benzene rings. This is ortho-biphenyl methyl free radical - the results should be much like those given in the table for para-biphenyl methyl free radical. Would you also carry out the calculation for system number 1 above, using all five structures, instead of just three. Also, using just three, but not with equal weights.

  I have known Dr. French for many years. She spent one year as Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology, on leave of absence from Wellesley College. During this period she made a careful investigation of the magnetic properties of some complex cyanides. The problem was a very difficult one, which she attacked with vigor and effectiveness.

  Miss French has a fine mind, and has, throughout her career, contributed significantly to chemical teaching and research.

  Memo to Linus Pauling from Himself,

  The Structure of β -manganese

  While on the plane from Chicago to Pasadena last week - rather two weeks ago - I had an idea about the structure of β -manganese, which has 20 atoms in a cubic unit. The idea is that the 20 atoms might be divided into 4 groups of 5 atoms each, each group consisting of a trigonal bipyramid - that is, a tetrahedron of 4 atoms with a 5th atom out from the center of one of the triangular faces of the tetrahedron; in other words, a double tetrahedron, two tetrahedra with a common face. On checking the structure I have found that this is in fact the case. β-manganese can accordingly be described as a way of packing these pentads, such that each atom has at least 12 nearest neighbors. Each of the smaller atoms, representing the apices of the bipyramids, is surrounded by 12 atoms which are approximately at the corners of an icosahedron. Each of the larger atoms is surrounded by 14 atoms, 2 of which, however, are so far away as hardly to constitute ligates of the central atom.

  If we examine the configuration about a double pyramid, we find that each pentad is surrounded by 6 atoms out from the 6 triangular faces of the bipyramid, then by 6 more introduced in such a way as to sit in pockets formed by 4 atoms, and so on.
