  Dear Stanley:

  I was pleased to get your letter, and to learn that it is you who was responsible for the smooth passage that we had across the Atlantic. We were indeed fortunate to have got across with so little inconvenience. Dave Shoemaker said that you had not had such good luck.

  We saw Professor Tiselius in London a couple of days ago. He said that the Claessons had returned, and seemed to be well satisfied with their American experiences.

  As to your possible collaboration with the Hollige Company on the manufacture of an elecrophoresis apparatus, I would say that there is no ruling at Cal. Tech. that would interfere with this collaboration, so long as it involves a minor amount of your time, and also does not involve your turning any inventions over to the company made under Cal. Tech. employment. If this question is involved, then it would, I think, be desirable to have the Patents Committee check up on the matter. My own recommendation to you would be not to get mixed up with the company unless the financial arrangement is a really satisfactory one to you.

  I am interested to learn that you like it in Sweden. My wife and I were very pleased with the place last summer, and we had originally planned to go back for a visit next summer, that is, this August. However, we have now decided not to do so much travelling, and accordingly shall not visit the Scandinavian countries at this time. You mention that you are considering getting a job in Sweden for the winter of '48-49, but I judge from the context that you mean the winter of '49-50. I shall be glad to learn how your plans develop.

  We are all getting along very well in England. Of course England is on much stricter rations that Sweden, and the supplies of food, clothing, and other materials are rather

  Meager, compared with Swedish standards. There is, however, very little complaint. Moreover, I have not noticed anything similar to the attitude that you have discovered in the British in Sweden, namely their taking offense at anything that suggests that America is better off than England. Perhaps the Britishers who travel to Sweden are a selected lot, and not a random sample.

  Dear Bob:

  I am glad to learn that you are having Trueblood finish up the lysozyme film, and that Holmes is getting ready to do something about the fly’s eye.

  As to Seymour Singer, I think that it would be very good to get him at work on proteins with x-ray. Swingle will be back in the fall to take over the electrophoresis and ultracentrifuge work. We do not have any arrangement with Swinger at present to continue, so far as I remember, and I do not know whether he has any commitments elsewhere or not. I think that he would probably want to continue with some film work, but he might well be able to have a student or assistant working on this, under his supervision, at the same time that he is doing the x-ray work. This is a matter that you would have to discuss with him.

  I suggest that you talk with him, and make him an offer of a job as Senior Research Fellow for, say, three years. I am not sure what his salary is now, but I would suggest about $4,200 would be about right. You may take this as my recommendation, plus or minus $300, according to your judgment. I think that it would be wise to get this matter settled right away.

  I am glad to learn that Jerry is going to the ASX-RED meeting in New Haven, and also that you are planning to take Ken Trueblood to the NFIF exhibit. Also I am very glad that Roger Hayward is doing so well on the model work. I think that we need to keep him as a member of our group.

  I have been having wonderful success in my development of a theory of metals. I think that it has really been very much worthwhile for me to get away for this period of time, under circumstances favorable to my thinking over questions and trying to find their solution. The problem of metals has been on my mind for a number of years, and I haven’t been able to leave it alone, so it is a good thing that I have now managed to get it solved.

  Best wishes to you for a rapid recovery. Use good judgment in taking care of yourself.

  We are continuing to have a wonderful time in Oxford, and we often think about you. How that spring has come here, and the weather is more like that in Pasadena, I myself find that I think about you more and more often, and wish that I could just come up the street in order to have a talk with you.

  We are all well now, although Crellin was sick for a week or so with a bad cold, and I have been suffering from a cold too. However, this is Easter vacation, so that it caused no inconvenience to anyone for me to stay home in bed, and now I am feeling well again.

  Ava Helen and I had a very nice trip about ten day ago. We went to Birkenhead on the train, and stayed for a day and night with Lord and Lady Leverhulme. Then we stayed for an couple of days with Dr. Hampson and his wife. Dr. Hampson had studied with me for two years, about ten years ago, when he was a Commonwealth Fellow. I spoke before the scientific people at the big Lever Brothers Port Sunlight plant, giving their annual research lecture, and then we went over to Liverpool, and I talked to the Liverpool branch of the Chemical Society.

  The spring flowers are blooming in all of the gardens in Oxford, and the flowering trees are in bloom now too, so that the city looks beautiful.

  A week from today we shall all leave Oxford for Paris, where we are going to stay for two weeks. We are looking forward to this experience.
