Dear Alfred:
I write now to state that the offer of appointment in my earlier letter to you should have made mention of the provision of a sum of money to defray in part the traveling expenses for you and your family from New York to Pasadena, and to rectify this omission. The sum which will be provided for this purpose is $400.00, payable on your arrival.
It is now some months past the beginning of the fiscal year at the California Institute, which is July 1. In view of this, it is to be understood that your appointment at the rate of $4000 per year would begin on your arrival in Pasadena. You probably know that salary checks are issued at the Institute at the end of each month.
The Institute has an arrangement with the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Corporation whereby an annuity can be purchased by a staff member, the Institute providing each month a sum equal to five percent of the monthly salary, provided that the staff member himself contributes an equal or larger amount. I believe that ordinarily a staff member must be in residence for two years before this arrangement becomes effective, but that in special cases, such as when the man has been purchasing a similar annuity at another institution, the arrangement may become effective immediately. Would you please let me know what your situation is with respect to this.
I hope very much that you will decide that the work in immunology for which I need your cooperation, is sufficiently interesting to cause you to accept this offer. Please decide without delay; I should hope to
see you in Pasadena in October if you decide to come. You know that I have the obligation of getting somebody else to do the work in case that you do not accept.
Helen and I were very happy to see you and Reba in New York, and we thank you for your kindness to us.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
