Duration: 0:57:53
An undergraduate geology course at St. Lawrence University inspired Peter Clark’s interest in glacial history and subsequent multi-decade academic career. His work on glaciers, ice sheets, and paleoclimatology has been integral to understanding not only Earth’s past climate, but also to modeling its future. He collaborates with researchers working on climate change around the globe and co-authored the “Sea Level Change” chapter of the Fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment report.
Clark recounts his path from recreating in the outdoors of California as a child to researching and teaching at Oregon State University. He discusses his academic trajectory and research around North America and the Arctic. Going more in depth into climate change, Clark describes how ice sheets play a role in global climate and explains abrupt climate change. Other highlights include teaching, his work with the IPCC, and a broader discussion of climate change.
