The Gerald W. Williams Electronic Records include images, word processing files, PowerPoint presentations and other electronic formats that chronicle Williams's research interests and scholarly productivity during his years working as a historian and sociologist for the U.S. Forest Service. The entire collection is born digital and is available upon patron request or for use in the SCARC reading room. Included are materials documenting the history of the Forest Service as well as various national forests across the United States. The collection likewise reflects Williams's involvement in historical outreach activities and events, his interest in forest fire policy, and his study of editorial cartoons as historical sources. Biographical data and professional documents detailing Williams's work over time are included as well.

Items from this collection, including born-digital materials, have been digitized and are available upon request.

Series 1: Williams Manuscripts, 1985-2005 Add to Shelf
Series 1 consists of manuscripts of articles, annotated bibliographies and detailed chronologies written by Williams on topics related to Forest Service and land use history. Two personal reflections on hunting are included as well. Unless otherwise indicated, each item consists of a single word processing file. Each file or folder organized into this series has also been renamed to reflect the full title given to a work by Williams. Copies of many of these items can be found elsewhere in the collection, organized into topically relevant folders and bearing the original file name assigned by Williams.

Series 4 consists of materials tracing Williams's involvement with and interest in two major Forest Service history outreach initiatives - the Forest Service Heritage Program and the Forest Service History Program. Relevant non-Williams materials are included as well, chief among them a book-length manuscript authored by David Grillo on the history of the Forest Service's Region 3 History Program.

Organized into Series 5 are a wide array of Forest Service images generally arranged by subject. Images depicting Forest Service personnel, including Chief Foresters, are included, as are images of Forest Service signage and Forest Service Regions 2 (Rocky Mountain Region) and 6 (Pacific Northwest). Images identified by Williams as having been sourced from the Forest Service Washington Office have been grouped together. These groups include visuals of fire prevention activities, Forest Service tableware, wilderness areas, and the Forest Service national headquarters at the Yates Building in Washington, D.C.

Series 6 primarily holds images obtained by Williams from the National Forest Fire Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. The images are largely of specific forest fires and often include photographs depicting briefings, management actions and public meetings associated with a given fire. The series also includes imagery and PowerPoint presentation materials documenting the history of the lab itself, including numerous photos of its construction.
