The Engineering Experiment Station Records document engineering research conducted by faculty, staff, and students at Oregon State University. The bulk of the collection is comprised of the Papers of Samuel H. Graf. The Engineering Experiment Station was established at Oregon Agricultural College in 1927. Samuel H. Graf earned several engineering degrees from Oregon Agricultural College, joined the faculty in 1909, and served as director of engineering research (1928-1944) and director of the Engineering Experiment Station (1944-1954).

Acquisition Note: The bulk of the materials (Subgroups 1 and 2) were transferred to the University Archives in 1967 and were microfilmed by 1970. The Technical Services Committee Records (SG 3) were transferred to the University Archives in 1971. The publications that comprise Subgroup 4 were received by the University Archives from the 1960s through 2001. They were initially maintained as distinct Publication Groups, but were incorporated into the Engineering Experiment Station Records in 2013.

Subgroup 1: General Subject File, 1914-1951 Add to Shelf

Subgroup 1 has been divided into two series: I. Engineering Experiment Station, 1914-1951 and II. Annual Reports and Budgets, 1915-1930. Series 1 contains documents describing the history of the Experiment Station and papers associated with its projects. The historical materials include a paper written by Samuel Graf in 1926 concerning the possible establishment of an Experiment Station at the College and a 1942 radio discussion describing the Experiment Station. Also contained within this series are correspondence, reports, and data associated with Western Pine Association cooperative research on dry kiln fans; the project "Expanded Shale Aggregate in Structural Concrete," completed by D. D. Ritchie and S. H. Graf; and engineering lab experiments completed in the 1914-1915 school year.

Series 2 provides administrative information about the Departments of Experimental Engineering and Mechanics and Materials specifically pertaining to planning and activities. These materials include biographical and salary information for engineering professors as well as details about the classes they taught. The series also includes correspondence, budgets, and other materials related to the activities of and planning for the Experiment Station including room efficiency records, course planning materials, and drawings of the proposed location and floor plan of a new engineering building.

Subgroup 2: Samuel H. Graf Papers, 1904-1964 Add to Shelf

Materials in Subgroup 2 were created and assembled by Samuel H. Graf. They were arranged into four series prior to microfilming: I. Correspondence, Mechanical Engineering and Experiment Station (S. H. Graf), 1912-1953; II. Pacific Coast Gas Association, 1918-1929; III. Publications, Manuscripts and Speeches, 1904-1964; and IV. Experiments and Experimental Engineering Course, 1909-1956. These materials contain Graf's departmental, instructional, and personal correspondence from 1912, the year of his appointment to head of the Department of Experimental Engineering, until 1953, one year before his retirement. Materials also include manuscripts of speeches and radio talks and notebooks containing essays with various topics unrelated to science.

One of Graf's many appointments was Chairman of the Committee on Pipe Protection, a subcommittee within the Pacific Coast Gas Association. Subgroup 2 contains materials pertaining to research completed by the Pacific Coast Gas Association. It also contains reports, publications, and testing data for projects and research completed by the Experiment Station between 1904 and 1964. A portion of these research documents were produced by students participating in experimental engineering lab courses.

Series 1: Correspondence, Mechanical Engineering and Experiment Station (S. H. Graf), 1912-1953 Add to Shelf
Series 1 consists of departmental, instructional, and personal correspondence produced by Samuel. H. Graf in the course of his work for Oregon State. The correspondence is arranged by six-month periods, and within each period it is, in general, alphabetical by company or personal name. Topics addressed within the correspondence include inquiries by Graf for gifts of new equipment and engineering literature and publications for use in the Department; responses to technical questions concerning testing techniques; and the completion of commercial tests by Oregon Agricultural College-including accompanying reports and data. This series also contains reports of the activities of the Experiment Station as well as correspondence between Graf and past engineering students.

Series 2: Pacific Coast Gas Association, 1918-1929 Add to Shelf
Series 2 consists of materials collected by Graf that document the work and activities of the Pacific Coast Gas Association. These materials include meeting notices, correspondence, publications, and research reports. Research topics included internal corrosion of gas mains, pipe protection, and oil processing. The series also contains materials related to an Oil Washing Plant. These include general log forms and data, correspondence, and lecture outlines. Additional correspondence and lecture material describe use of the chemical naphthalene as a pesticide. Of special note is a publication titled the "Gas Engineer's Handbook" which was produced by the Pacific Coast Gas Association. The series contains correspondence related to this publication as well as other booklets and pamphlets presenting the research findings of the Association. Samuel H. Graf was the chairman of the Committee on Pipe Protection, a subcommittee within the Pacific Coast Gas Association.

Series 3 consists of reports, notebooks, publications, radio transcripts, correspondence, and speeches related to the research and activities of the Experiment Station and Department of Engineering. Topics documented within this series are diverse and include English literature, engineering equipment and product analyses, and the demand for engineers during the 1950s. This series also contains two certificates received by Graf.

Series 4: Experiments and Experimental Engineering Course, 1909-1956 Add to Shelf

Series 4 consists of laboratory notes, data, and logs for tests and experiments performed by engineering students during the 1909-1918 and 1922-1923 school years. These experiments occurred in the Cement, Highway, Structural Materials, and Hydraulics engineering labs and analyzed the efficiency, quality, viscosity, and/or impact resistance of various materials and machines. Experimental topics included steel, cement, and steam testing; density and viscosity assessment of oils; examination and calibration of gages; cross-bending testing in timber; compression testing; heating value and proximate analysis of coal; coefficient of friction assessment for lubricants; pressure testing; and engine comparison analyses.

Also included within this series are experimental engineering course listings, reports, and responses to reports.

Subgroup 3: Technical Services Committee Records, 1965-1970 Add to Shelf
Subgroup 3 has been divided into six series: I. Technical Services Act, 1965; II. Committee Correspondence, 1965-1970; III. Proposals, 1965-1968; IV. Annual Reports, 1966-1968; V. Progress Report; 1969-1970, and VI. Department of Commerce Bulletins, 1966. The documents in this subgroup were produced or collected by the chairman of the Committee, J. G. Knudsen. They provide a summary of the Technical Services Act of 1965 and discussions of its implementation at Oregon State University. A large portion of the materials describe projects completed under the Act, mainly by the fishing and food processing industries. This subgroup also contains extensive documentation of the Technical Services Information Center Project.
Series 1: Technical Services Act, 1965 Add to Shelf
In addition to a summary of the State Technical Services Act of 1965, Series 1 contains memos, meeting minutes, reports, and handwritten notes documenting the activities of and future planning for the University's Technical Services Committee. This series also contains reports and correspondence concerning the proposal for and establishment of the Act.

Series 2 consists of reports, proposals, newspaper clippings and correspondence that describe the impact the Technical Services Act (TSA) would have on Oregon State University and the way in which it would be implemented. The correspondence is arranged, in general, in one year increments and was in large part sent between the State Department of Planning and Development and the OSU Technical Services Committee. Proposals in Series 2 contain estimates of the costs and benefits of the University's participation in the TSA and outline possible departmental goals and plans for future developments under the Act. Also contained within this series are signed agreements between the State Department of Commerce and OSU describing the University's participation in the TSA as well as documents related to planning for a Technical Services Information Center.

Series 3: Proposals, 1965-1968 Add to Shelf
Series 3 contains correspondence, reports, publications and proposals related to the State Technical Services (STS) program. Correspondence and reports relate to the status of Technical Services Act Projects, transfer of funds between departments, and proposals for funding submitted by these departments. The report Oregon State Technical Services Program, produced as three volumes in 1966 by the Department of Commerce, is included in Series 3. This series also contains a five-year plan for the University's participation in the STS program which describes the departments involved and proposed projects, including budgetary information.

Series 4 contains annual reports from 1966, 1967, and 1968 documenting the programs conducted under the State Technical Services Act in the State of Oregon. Report topics also include the discontinuation of the Technical Services Information Center Project in 1967 due to lack of funding and time and the status of projects conducted in the fishing and food processing industries.

Series 6 contains three bulletins offering guidelines and describing requirements for writing State Technical Services Project reports. The first bulletin is titled Guidelines for Preparing Special Merit Program Proposals and was produced by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1966. The second and third bulletins are respectively titled Data Requirements for Reporting on Programs Supported Under the State Technical Services Act of 1965 and Principles for Determining Direct and Indirect Costs Applicable to State Technical Services Program Grants Under Public Law 89-182.

Subgroup 4 consists of 4 series: I. Engineering Publications Lists, 1972-1980; II. Engineering Experiment Station Circulars, 1929-1989; III. Engineering Experiment Station Bulletins, 1929-1979; and IV. Engineering Experiment Station Reprints, 1927-1966. These publications were prepared by Engineering faculty and administrators to disseminate research and provide information about research accomplishments in engineering at Oregon State. Of special note are the proceedings of the Northwest Road Building (later Roads and Streets) Conference from 1953 to 1972; annual and biennial reports of research activities from the late 1950s through 1980s; reports and surveys on pollution in Oregon streams and the Willamette River in the 1920s through 1940s; annual progress reports of fence post preservation treatments conducted by T.J. Starker at the Oregon State post farm; and reports of studies on wood waste disposal. Many of the publications are available online in ScholarsArchive; some are available in paper form and a few only on microfilm.

Series 1 consists of three lists of Engineering Experiment Station publications issued in 1972, 1974, and 1975 and a 1980 update. The lists provide the titles, authors, and dates for the Engineering Experiment Station Bulletins, Circulars, and Reprints. The 1980 update also indicates which publications are out-of-print. The materials in this series were previously designated as PUB 8-34b.

Series 2: Engineering Experiment Station Circulars, 1929-1989 Add to Shelf
Series 2 consists of 62 publications prepared by Engineering faculty or administrators. The primary purpose of the circulars was to distribute compilations of useful data. Most (48) of the circulars are available online in ScholarsArchive@OSU via the links below. Five of the Circulars (nos. 47-58) are only available in paper form. Seven of the Circulars (nos. 1, 5, 7, 12-15, and 20 are only available on microfilm. All of the Circulars numbered 1-30 are available on microfilm reel 32. The circulars were previously designated on PUB 8-33a.
