Earning an undergraduate degree in fish and game management from OSC in 1937, Jay S. Gashwiler went on to receive a master's degree at the University of Maine in 1939. Gashwiler stayed in Maine working for the university until 1948, when he transferred to a position with the U.S. Fisheries and Wildlife Service and served as a biologist in Utah and Oregon. In 1958 Gashwiler received a courtesy appointment with the OSU Fisheries and Wildlife Department, a position that he held until 1967. Specializing in the study of forestland rodents such as deer mice and squirrels, Gashwiler also researched tree seedlings and the impact of clearcuts upon plants and animals.
