The College of Liberal Arts Videotapes consist primarily of instructional or promotional productions created or assembled by the College. Eight of the videotapes are VHS format; the remainder (12) are 3/4" Umatic. Several of the videotapes were produced by Oregon State students in broadcast communications.
Eleven items (FV186:09 - FV186:19) are College and University Teaching (CAUT) Program instructional videotapes (3/4" Umatic format) from the 1970s. These address a variety of topics including lecturing; analyzing questions; responding to student questions; demonstrating learning; assignments; cognitive and affective lecturing goals; nonverbal cues to attentiveness in lectures; and teaching styles.
The Liberal Arts at OSU is a set of 5 VHS videotapes produced in 1980-1981 [FV186:04 - FV186:08] that provides an introduction to liberal arts at Oregon State and the reading, writing, and research skills necessary for success. The videotapes include footage of Oregon State students and faculty and many campus scenes; the intended audience was new and prospective students. Jerry O'Connor, Head Advisor for the College of Liberal Arts, gives the introduction on each videotape. The set was produced by senior students in the broadcast media communication program, Kevin Costello, Glenn Hale, Kingsley Kelley, Marcia Redding, and Jim Wood. Each videotape is approximately 5-10 minutes. Set titles are as follows -- Part 1: Getting Acquainted; Part 2: Preparation; Part 3: The Value; Part 4: Reality; Part 5: Writing.
The collection also includes Ages of Crisis [FV186:01], a College of Liberal Arts lecture series, produced by Tracy Kay Haaland in 1984. This tape is 3/4" Umatic. Foreign Languages in Careers [FV186:02] was produced and written by Dr. Wolfgang Dill in 1986. The 27-minute VHS videotape includes interviews with people in various professions who discuss the advantage of knowledge of a foreign language in their work. INSIGHT: Parent/Student Relations [FV186:03] was produced by Barbara J. Modey, an Oregon State student, in 1984 and addresses the transition from high school to college. It includes footage of students, campus scenes, and Mom's Weekend activities. The 10-minute tape is available in VHS format.
A VHS videotape of United States Senator Ron Wyden's lecture on April 10, 1996 as part of the Governor Tom McCall Memorial Lectureship in Public Affairs was recorded by KATU Television of Portland, Oregon, a co-sponsor of the lectureship [FV186:20]. The recording includes the introduction of Senator Wyden by Dean Kay Schaffer.
