These videotapes document a program sponsored by the Office of Naval Research in cooperation with the H. John Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment to commemorate the history of the Office of Naval Research and Oceanography. The videotapes record oral history interviews with noted ocean scientists and engineers.
Scope and Content Notes
This collection consists of videotapes of the proceedings of the "Oceanography: The Making of a Science" colloquia series and videotape interviews of leading oceanographers and scholars produced as the oral history component of the colloquia. Included is the complete and unedited raw footage of more than 100 colloquia presentations and 45 oral history interviews. Printed material accompanying the collection consists of an overview booklet with essays from representatives of the sponsoring organizations, programs for each of the colloquia, and a paper presented at the University of Washington regional colloquia by Oregon State University President Emeritus John V. Byrne on the development of oceanographic studies at OSU. The oral history tapes include interviews with OSU oceanographers John V. Byrne and Larry Small. OSU faculty member Ron Doel served as one of the oral history interviewers.
Biographical / Historical Notes
"Oceanography: The Making of a Science" program was sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment. It consisted of five regional and one national colloquia held from January through March 2000 and featured presentations on historical and contemporary topics in oceanography. The regional colloquia were held at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA); the University of Miami (Miami, FL); Scripps Institution of Oceanography (San Diego, CA); Texas A&M University (College Station, TX); and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Woods Hole, MA). The national colloquia was held at the U.S. Senate Hart Building in Washington, D.C.
Arrangement
The tapes are organized in two groups -- the colloquia proceedings and the oral history project. The colloquia tapes are arranged by site. The oral history project tapes are arranged by the site of the interviews and then by correspondent. All of the videotapes are VHS format cassettes. At the present time, there are no transcripts available for the oral histories.
