The Marian Field Collection is comprised of botanical illustrations produced by Marian Field, an Oregon artist and botanical illustrator. The illustrations in the collection appear to have been generated by Field between 1933 and 1941 in collaboration with faculty at the University of Oregon and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The collection includes approximately 250 illustrations of plants and fungi, materials from an exhibit of Field's works, photographs, correspondence, and a short biography of Field's life and work.

Statement on Description:

The Marian Field Collection was processed in 1999. The collection was reprocessed in 2018 to bring it into compliance with current processing standards and include recently accessioned materials.

SCARC describes the contents of its collections using the language and terminology of the collections themselves. Since culturally acceptable terminology shifts over time, some of the terms that appear in these materials are currently outdated or offensive.

Historically, “squaw” has been used as a misogynist and racist slur to disparage indigenous American women. Within this historic usage, it has been applied to place names, and scientific or colloquial names for plants. In this collection, the term "squaw" is used in reference to the colloquial name for Ribes cereum, a currant native to western North America.

In order to provide historical context and to enable standardized searching and access across our collections, we have retained the use of this phrase in the collection description. We acknowledge the racism represented by this language and the harm it may cause our users. Providing access to these historical materials does not endorse any attitudes or behavior depicted therein. Acquisition Note: Field's illustrations and other materials related to Trees and Shrubs in Winter were held by the University of Oregon Herbarium until 1993 when the University of Oregon and Oregon State University herbariums were combined on the Oregon State University campus. The Marian Field Collection was then transferred to the OSU Archives in December 1998. The Applegate Art Guild donated Illustrations and photographs of Oregon fungi to the Special Collections and Archives Research Center in March of 2015. The collection now resides in the Special Collections and Archives Research Center.

Series 1: Illustrations for Trees and Shrubs in Winter, 1936-1982 Add to Shelf

Series 1 is comprised predominately of 193 pen and ink botanical illustrations of woody plants produced by Marian Field between 1936 and 1941. The drawings were originally intended to illustrate Trees and Shrubs in Winter by Frank Sipe, a botany professor at the University of Oregon. The series also includes a small quantity of correspondence documenting Sipe's efforts to publish the book, colorized photographs of 15 of Field's illustrations, and reprints of her illustrations of Acer macrophyllum and several species belonging to genus Arctostaphylos. The project, which was supported by the Works Project Administration (WPA), was defunded prior to publication.

Following the discontinuation of the book project, the illustrations were held and exhibited by the University of Oregon Herbarium. Twelve text panels from this exhibit are included in the series and provide details about the life and work of Marian Field, context for the production of the illustrations, and information about the process of plant identification. The source of some of the exhibit text, a manuscript biographical sketch of Marian Field produced by Mary Field Etter in December 1982, is also present along with a partial inventory of the illustrations.

Series 2: Illustrations of Oregon Fungi, 1933-1934 Add to Shelf

Series 2 is comprised of 54 illustrations of fungi created between 1933 and 1934. These illustrations were produced in a variety of sizes and mediums and include pencil drawings, oil paintings, and watercolors. Some illustrations depict the subjects in various life stages and sometimes contain notes on the origin of the reference specimen. It is likely these illustrations were produced in collaboration with Louis Henderson, curator of the University of Oregon Herbarium.

The series also includes 8 matted photographs of assorted species of mushrooms that may have been used as reference images for Field's illustrations. Many of the photographs are colorized and all but one include handwritten notes identifying the species.
