Dear Barclay,
It was a pleasure to see you but I am sorry I didn't get a chance to see more of you. I apologize for not writing letters, since I have been back I have written no letters at all.
I am not sure that is true. I cannot remember now whether I did it or not, but I certainly intended to write you and ask you about the amounts of gaseous and liquid nitrogen you used per day to cool a crystal on a precession camera. If I did write you would you please answer the letter, and if I did not, how much gaseous and liquid nitrogen do you use per day to cool a crystal on the precession camera? I am looking into the problem of cooling a crystal to liquid nitrogen temperature on my 4-circle diffractometer. One of my problems is that my laboratory is not on a lift and there is going to be a certain amount of trouble humping Dewars down a flight of stairs into the laboratory. I think I shall have to put in an electric hoist.
One of my colleagues, Dr. Pulak Chakravarti, the Chief Programmer on our IBM 360 computer is coming to Los Angeles for the SHARE conference beginning the 3rd March. I think it would be valuable if he were to see a little bit of the computational facilities at Cal. Tech., and would ask that if he contacts you, you could put him in touch with the appropriate people in the Computer Department. I think he is quite good as a Chief Programmer. He may ring up some time and all you have to do I think is to tell him whom to get hold of at the Computer Centre.
Things are going fairly well here. Our diffractometer was out of action for a couple of months while the laboratory was being overhauled, but the boys are now lining it up again and I think it will be going about the beginning of next week. It has taken rather a long time to overhaul the laboratory and get the instrument back into operation. I am very anxious for it to start working again.
Linus has been here for a couple of months and has been great fun, though I have not seen as much of him as I should like. He seems to be rushing around like mad and keeping pretty busy. [...]
Many thanks for your help.
Much love,
Peter Pauling
