    Dr. Oscar Riddle

    321 East Fourth Street

    Bloomington, Indiana

    Dear Dr. Riddle:

I apologize for not having answered your earlier letter. I am happy to accept the award as Rationalist of 1960, and I thank you and the American Rationalist Federation for having selected me.

I wish that I could be present at the banquet of the American Rationalist Federation on the evening of 13 August, but my circumstances are such that it is not possible. I enclose a message to the Federation, and request that it be read to the delegates, if it is convenient to do so.

My wife and I had planned to attend the April meetings of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, and then found that the speaking tour that we were embarked upon had become more extended than we had expected, so that we were not able to come to the meeting.

    Cordially yours,

    Dictated by Professor Pauling

    Signed in his absence: jh
