- Letter from John Laughlin to LP, RE: Laughlin is flattered to have received LP's letter about the Appeal to the United Nations. Laughlin has long admired LP and his career, and his first impulse was to sign the appeal. However, while Laughlin does agree with the points that LP presents he feels that additional points are needed and that the Appeal is a bit oversimplified; because of that he will not sign it. - Note from LP to Sir RE: Indicates that a statement made in a recent article of the Chemical and Engineering News was false, which stated incorrectly that of the 2000 scientists that signed the appeal only 207 are members of the ACS. Corrects this information based on the 2173 actual signatures on the appeal and breaks down the percentage of scientists that signed based on which field of science they identify themselves with. Comments that the appeal is going to continue to circulate and he hopes many more chemists will sign. Handwritten, personal note from LP to Walter at the bottom of the last page explains that he wrote the note to him because he is the editor of Chemical and Engineering News and hopes that he will publish it in an upcoming issue. [Letter from Mr. Murphy to LP July 31, 1957] [Filed under LP Manuscripts of Articles: 1957a2.4]
