Williams, Department of Chemistry, University of Texas, RE: Says they have 180 + 10 students in general chemistry each year, about half majoring in science and half majoring in engineering, and a few graduating to go to medical school. Explains that two lectures are given each week, either by himself or by one of his Associate Professors and that the same textbook is used with both lectures. Tells Williams that all the students attend the same lectures and that students in different sections take the same quizzes and final exams. Explains that the 180 students are divided into 9 sections, each with a graduate student in charge during the 3 hour laboratory periods and one recitation.   • Letter from Leo Szilard to LP RE: Tells LP that he and Dr. William Doering of Yale prepared a Memorandum which proposes the creation of the Research Institute for Fundamental Biology and Public Health and the Institute for Problem Studies. Says he wants to know if LP agrees with the proposal contained in the Memorandum and asks if he will be willing to serve as an Affiliate Member of the Research Institute. Explains that the Institutes will not make great demands of him as an Affiliate Member. Explains that Mr. Canfield, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Harper & Brothers, Publishers, could not go much farther with this planning unless their views were shared by others. Encloses an Appendix with the Memorandum which contains Szilard's guesses of what kind of work might be done in the Institutes.
