Memo to Linus Pauling from Himself

The formula of sodium paratungstate, by K. Saddington and R. W. Cahn, J. Chem. Soc.,1950, 3526.

X-ray diffraction studies have been made of crystals of sodium paratungstate. It is found that the triclinic unit contains two molecules Na10W12O41.28H2O. There would be about 3.4 molecules of the alternative formula, Na6W7O4.16 H2O. It is suggested that work by Jander showing that there are complexes with a 5-fold negative charge in solution indicates that the formula is Na5 [HW6O21]. 13½ H2O.
