  Dearest Ava Helen:

  My tummy is still full of the grapefruit, pancakes, syrup, bacon, and coffee which I had a couple of hours ago for breakfast- the same as yesterday morning. Last night I ate a good steak, after having omitted lunch.

  The weather has been good, with no snow or rain. I walked for five minutes at three stops yesterday. In New Mexico, at the Raton Pass, 7600 feet high, there was snow on the ground, and this morning when I look out of the window I saw the Mississippi covered with ice. There is about four inches of snow here in Illinois, but it doesn't look to be very cold.

  I have read most of the applications, also two manuscripts for the JACS, stories in the Sat. E.P., and even a boring short novel by Alec Waugh in the Red Book.

  In the paper this morning I saw this definition:

  "Encyclopedia Americana

  Stalemate.....A married man"

  I'll show you when I get back home that the definition is not universally applicable.

  Do you remember Carl Thurston? (Wild Flowers). He has written two books on art appreciation ("How to Look at Pictures') and now applies for a Guggenheim to study the philosophy ^and psychology of art as expressed in primitive works. He seems to be an interesting man.

  Some of the applications are pathetic- from good, kind people who need help, but have no unusual abilities. One man, about 40, married the widow of a colleague, with three children, just after getting his PhD, and has been struggling along with heavy teaching loads at New Jersey Teachers College. He needs a rest badly, and offers some Shakespearean project- but he is only of ordinary ability.

  The six best applicants in English are Harvard PhD's, four in 1934! One (PhD. 1940) is only 25. He has a great collection of Thackeray's letters, including several hundred turned over to him by " [Thackeray's] Granddaughter, and he seems to be a very good scholar.

  There aren't many applicants about whom I am really enthusiastic- Libby, Schomaker, a few others. That young English potter Haile looks good, also Barker, a young bacteriologist at Berkeley. A woman, Miss Marks, 65 years old, at Mt. Holyoke (director of the experimental theater) has written a book "The Family of the Barrett", published in 1938, and wants to write one "The Enchanted Island of the B[r]ownings", about Jamaica. She seems to be good. She must retire this year- and here savings were lost through poor investments made by a "friend." Do you remember meeting or hearing of her?

  Dearest Paddy:

  I didn’t write to you at all yesterday. I hope this reaches you. You are a sweetheart. Yesterday I had a good time both at the Folk dancing and at the Edsalls. The English couple were very nice. He was sorry indeed, to miss you. He knows Bernal, Dirac, Fowler, etc. We will see them in New York next month. He is a physicist interested in biology a la Del Bruck. He knows him. He has been in Stockholm and came through Russia to San Francisco. Thursday I was awakened at midnight by Peter who had lost his undigested supper. Friday morning he went to school with Dr. Bell but I got him at noon and he has been in bed since with what appears to be an upset stomach. I think he will be all right soon. When he was in bed with me. —- I took him in poor little fellow — he said “I won’t pester you Mamma.” Last night Linda slept with me but she is such a wiggler I didn’t get much sleep. Sometimes I’m amused at the effect I have on people. I’ll tell you about this when you come home. I called Mrs. Augé to ask her to come to the F.D. I was surprised again by the similarity of her voice to Ruth Tolman’s. Her English is somewhat better though. She came and is really awfully nice and it is a shame her sphere is so limited. I wish she could be your Secretary. She probably has more responsibility than Miss Rooke, though. [switch to child’s cursive handwriting here] Peter seltp [sic] with mama Thursday night.   Dear little love:

  I got in safely at 8 ³⁰ — after as usual when I am away from you having had a hard time getting to sleep at night — its [sic] strange how much I can sleep when I am with you. I got a room at the Commodore (a nice little one for $3 — due to my professional discount) and at 9 ³⁰ went to the meeting. The committee includes Aydelotte, Dr Sabin, Wilson, _ Notestein of Yale. We set right to work and (with an hour off for lunch) finished at 4 ⁴⁵ ! I looked to see if I could get home earlier, but found no way of making it — if the Superchief ran every day I could get home a day sooner.

  A nice air-mail letter was awaiting me at the office — but it was from James, containing a telegram asking if we could build four of my instruments at once. You seem to have been serious in saying that my visit here is so short that there is no need for you to write. I am going now to dinner with Henry. I think I shall go then to call on Landsteiner, and

  tomorrow go out to Columbia — and then at 4 start for Chicago — and home to my beautiful little wife.

  Sunday- 10³⁰ PM

  Dearest little sweetheart Ava Helen:

  I have just returned from dinner with Henry at the Century Club. It was a great occasion- which built up effortlessly and planlessly. I met him there at 6:15. We looked at the exhibit of paintings- especially some wonderful ones by Childe Harold. Then we sat in the lounge and drank a small bottle of wine- a light imported wine with delicate flavor (Henry you remember is chairman of the Wine Committee). Then Augustus Tack, an artist, joined us, and we had clams on the half shell and a small bottle of a more strongly flavored wine- "Sylvanus". Then a man- rather plump and with a black moustache, and balding (He reminded me in many ways of Bob Robertson, ten years older) joined us. He was Nock, Professor of Biblical Literature at Harvard. From then until he left to see "Louisiana Purchase" he talked without stop- partly latin, partly French, much Wodehouse, poetry (he was an intimate friend of Houseman), limericks (which became uninhibited as his alcoholic proof increased), stories. Aydelotte also joined us. Moe said later that Nock's performance was very mild indeed- that he was afraid of Aydelotte- but that he was more amusing this way. He repeated pages of the best Wodehouse pages, made many bons mots. The only limerick I remember was (of course) his baudiest:

  "The wife of the Master of Tizes(?)

  Was brought up before the assizes

  For teaching the boys

  Connubial joys

  And giving French letters asprizes."

  Nock is a Senior Fellow of the Harvard Society. He said that he remembered my having dinner there with Conant a year ago.

  For dinner tonight we had turtle soup, a steak (for the five of us), onions frites, three quarts of claret. After the others left I talked to Henry for a couple of hours. He surely knows the scholars of the country! He said that ultimately the ^J.S.G.^M.F would have $35000000, and asked whether I thought they should expand to include the NRF region or not. I said yes- and also that some grants-in-aid might be good, for people in small colleges.

  By the way, Werner was passed, also Libby. Johnson was turned down, mainly because of Cope's poor performance on a similar project. Bethe was deferred so that his status could be examined. I'll tell you about others later.

  During the last hour with Henry I was uncomfortable because the wine had upset my lower bowels. I managed to reach the hotel, and now feel somewhat better.

  Your letter, written Thursday, has pleased me, dear little wife.

  I think that I shall go to the Rock. Inst. tomorrow.

  Dear Dr. Sherwood:

  If you desire us to make one or more instruments for oxygen analysis, as mentioned in your letter of January 25 an dour subsequent telegrams, I would like to have specifications, especially with respect to the following points. I think that we could provide an instrument satisfying almost any particular specifications, provided that some leeway were granted in other respects.

  1. Should the range of oxygen partial pressure be 0 to 160 mm. or 0 to 200 or still larger?

  2. Do you want measurements made on the air of the room, or measurements made on small gas samples, which would be introduced into a chamber in the apparatus by displacement of the gas already there? We could make the apparatus with a volume to be displaced by the gas as small as about 10 cc.

  3. Is it all right to require that the instrument be level during the measurement?

  4. Are there any restrictions on weight or volume? The instrument would weigh perhaps three pounds and be six inches in largest dimension, but it could be made lighter and smaller.

  5. Will there by much variation in total pressure? If all measurements are made at atmospheric pressure we would not worry about adjusting the instrument to be independent of variations in total pressure.

  6. Would +/- 3mm. partial pressure of oxygen be satisfactory rather than +/- 3% accuracy?

  7. Should the instrument be adjusted to be an independent of temperature variations, or would it be satisfactory if it read correctly at room temperature?

  8. Is a relaxation time of 10 seconds satisfactory?

  9. I should point out that nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and chlorine dioxide would cause errors, each millimeter of one of these gases corresponding to about 1.2 mm. of oxygen pressure.

  I suppose that you know that Kronberg was in the hospital for a few days, suffering from a psychoneurosis of some sort. He had apparently been worrying among other things about money, and we had just given him some teaching duties, covering his tuition here. Now he is scheduled to rest for a while, and he has just gone up to Deep Springs for a vacation and for getting acquainted with the possibility of his being given an appointment for the coming year. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him physically, and I hope t at [sic] with rest he will get out of the habit of thinking so much about himself.

  I have heard from several sources that you are going to the General Electric Company, and I have guessed that you would perhaps work on order-disorder phenomena in metals. I trust that you will not continue to flirt with Miss Wrinch.

  Now that you are leaving the freshman chemistry field, I am getting into it. Since the first of January I have been giving the freshman lectures, and finding the job a very pleasant one. Hildebrand's "Principles of Chemistry" has not been any too good as a text, but I am afraid that no book would seem satisfactory.

  February 28, 1941

  Dear Crellin, Linda, Peter, and Linus, Jr.:

  Mamma and I have had our birthday party, and are now back in our room in the hotel. We arrived here this morning. Dr and Mrs Ferry had a little English boy and a sick cousin in their house, using up their spare beds, so we came to a hotel. We got our mail, including Peter's letter, from Mrs. Ferry. It is cold here below freezing. It isn't snowing, but there is ice on the ground.

  This afternoon I went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to do the work I had to do. Then I came back to our hotel on the subway. Boston and New York are the only two American cities that have subways. At the hotel I found that the dear Mamma had bought me a nice birthday cake, with little clowns and a dancing pig and two little Red Riding Hoods made of frosting on it. We went to the dining room and had our dinner oysters on the half shell, clam chowder, broiled lobster, a big bottle of champagne, and our cake with coffee. It was good and we had fun. During the dinner a telegram came, saying Happy Birthday, from Mrs Rooke and the boys at the Laboratory.

  Now we are getting ready to go to bed. Today I walked across the Harvard Yard and left a letter for Mrs Conant from Mamma. Dr Conant, the President of Harvard, is in England now. Tomorrow I am going to the Harvard Medical School and probably to the Harvard Chemistry Laboratories. On Monday we are going to Princeton.
