Letter from Linus Pauling to A.A. Noyes. November 18, 1930Pauling details his belief that Caltech's freshman chemistry course should focus on descriptive rather than theoretical chemistry. He argues the hands-on, experiment-based learning of descriptive chemistry will draw students into the field much more readily than the mathematics of theoretical chemistry. He encourages Noyes to consider redesigning the freshman chemistry curriculum and suggests that Caltech faculty member Professor Bell be put in charge of the revised approach to the teaching of chemistry.
