Dear Mamma -
I just saw in Science that Howard Lucas had died. I have been pretty sheltered during my lifetime from death of relatively close friends, and it is a bit hard to learn that someone I have known as long as I can remember has died. I didn't know Howard very well, yet I can picture very clearly his rather lean face, with such a winning smile.
I was also sorry to hear about Jeffy. Yet Jeffy was old, and had lived a good life. Fortunately he didnt get sick and awful the way dogs are prone to do when they get old. It is nice to know that he is buried in such a nice place.
I guess that I’ll get to Pasadena on the evening of the 30th of this month. I’ll let you know the time, flight number etc., when I get my tickets. My trip will cost me about $60 over what the grant will pay, since I plan to stop both in NY and in Pasadena. Is your offer to make that my birthday present still on? If so, do you suppose you might be able to send it before I leave? I leave here on the 23rd. I’ll spend a few days in Pasadena perhaps a week. It depends on how lonely for my family I get.
Some friends of mine named Fielding are vacationing in Calif., and their son, who is a car nut like the rest of us, wants to go look at the Merc. I told them that they could probably go look at it, so they may ring up around the 16th, 15th. They are rather interesting people, but pretty neurotic.
I am thinking a little of applying for a job in New Zealand. From the little I know of it, it sounds like a reasonable job. But New Zealand, although a pretty place, is a long way from anywhere. I am going to talk to the fellow on Friday, and then I guess I’ll have to decide. (Whether or not to apply). I’ll have to talk it over with you when I’m there.
Well, I'm doing an experiment.
Much love -
Crellin
