23 Sept 1961
Dear Linus and Anita:
Mamma and I are thinking about moving to San Francisco. I would be Lecturer in Molecular Biology and Medicine (tentative title) in the U.Cal Medical School. Some reasons are the following:
1. I think that in a medical environment I might be stimulated to have some new ideas. I have little contact with medical people here, and C.I.T. is not sympathetic to my efforts in this direction.
2. The appointment would allow me to come and go at will, whereas here I am restrained by having to give regular lectures.
3. Mamma and I think that it would be fun to live in San Francisco for a few years. We would probably rent an apartment.
4. The trip to the ranch would take about 4 hours, instead of 6.
Now I write to ask if you would make a gift to U.Cal. for support of my researches during 1962. If you would, it would make the transfer much easier than otherwise. We might move to San Francisco on 1 January 1962. I would keep some connection with C.I.T. for a year or two, to wind up the work being done there under my direction.
Could you let me know soon? I plan to talk with the U.Cal Medical School people on 6 October.
Much love from
Daddy
P.S. Linda, Barclay, and the twins came home yesterday. Mamma is in San Francisco today and tomorrow, giving two lectures.
