  • Handwritten note from Mrs. Margaret Robertson to the Prime Minister, House of Commons, RE: Robertson says that the procrastination in negotiating peace and the hypocrisy in Government propaganda is obvious to most people. She says, “As American women demanded at the White House so British women demand of Westminster: “End the Arms Race, instead of the Human Race.” [Filed under LP Correspondence (R: Correspondence, 1961) #342.2]

  • Letter from LP to F.E. Hornyak, RE: Some of Mr. Hornyak’s statements involve definitions; he might find it helpful to look at Lewis and Randall’s Thermodynamics.  The standard state for an ion is usually defined for a definite solvent, which he might want to assume is water.  However, 9a contradicts this.  He cannot tell from the letter what it is that Mr. Hornyak and his colleagues have been arguing about, but it may be a matter of definition and usage. 11 August 1961

    Dear Peter:

In the 1 August 1961 issue of the Physical Review there is an article on HCrO2 in which the authors discuss antiferromagnetism in very nearly the same way as I had planned to do for this substance when I saw a preliminary note about its magnetic properties. I think that this means that it would be wise for us to get the manuscript on antiferromagnetism ready for publication - our manuscript goes a long way beyond the two or three paragraphs of these authors. Do you think that there is a good chance of your getting some of the things done that ought to be done? I feel that it would be wise for us to write our article without waiting to get all of the applications of the theory made. What do you think about sending it to Nature?

As to the certified check that you have, I must say that the bank said that I should send it registered and insured, because a bank might not require identification of the person cashing the check, and it might be dangerous to carry it around. Also, I point out that even at four percent it would bring in $50.00 per month interest, and it ought to be drawing interest. If you want to mail it back to me, please do so. Don't lose it.

Mama and I expect to arrive in London on the morning of 11 September and to leave on 20 September, coming home on that day.

    Love from

    [Linus Pauling]
