Letter from Linus Pauling to J.D. Bernal. October 5, 1949Pauling asks Bernal to recheck his earlier (1928) work on the structure of eta-bronze and, if possible, to send the crystal samples used in his earlier work. He notes that he and Shoemaker have discovered a length for the repetition of the crystal structure for eta-bronze (based on twenty-year old samples from Bernal) different from that given by Bernal’s original investigation. Pauling wonders if there was a mistake in Bernal’s original investigation or whether eta-bronze occurs in two forms.
