Letter from Linus Pauling to August Strand. February 28, 1949Pauling writes of his disturbance in hearing the news that the contract of Dr. Ralph Spitzer is to be discontinued, presumably on the basis of his unconventional political beliefs. He protests as an alumnus of Oregon Agricultural College and likewise because of his interest in Oregon State, his chairmanship of the Chemistry Division at CIT, his presidency of the American Chemical Society, and as a man interested in the educational system. Pauling provides reasons why he knows that Spitzer is not being discharged due to his ability and feels that it is his American duty to be sure that Dr. Spitzer’s beliefs are protected. He talks about the efforts at Oregon State to improve itself and how this dismissal would ruin those efforts. He also mentions appointing Spitzer to the Committee on Patent Legislation and hopes that the appointment of Dr. LaVallee at Oregon State College will be continued as well.
