  Gentlemen:

  During recent weeks I have seen in several magazines two advertisements for Canada Dry Water, which have aroused my curiosity. These advertisements refer to the effect of melting ice on drinks made with ordinary club soda, and state or suggest that something different about Canada Dry Water, perhaps the factor called ten point carbonation, causes drinks made with this water to retain their carbon dioxide longer than those made with other carbonated waters, and also causes an open bottle of Canada Dry Water to keep its sparkle longer than other carbonated waters.

  During the past twenty-five years I have learned a great deal about chemistry and physics. Reading your advertisement has aroused my curiosity as to what is responsible for the difference in behavior of Canada Dry Water which is described. There is no statement or hint in the advertisement as to the nature of the phenomenon or the nature of the difference between Canada Dry Water and other carbonated waters. I should be pleased to hear from you in regard to this, and to have you send me a scientific explanation of the phenomenon.

  I am requesting this information from you purely to satisfy my scientific curiosity. I do not have any connections with industries or with organized consumers' groups of any sort. The only appointments which I hold are at the California Institute of Technology and with the United States Government, the latter relating to war work and to advisory work for the Department of Agriculture.

  Dear Dr. Conant:

  I am writing to lay before you a matter about which I have been thinking during the past five months, and to ask for your advice.

  When I began work on the Committee on Hyper-Velocity Guns last August, the idea occurred to me that it should be possible to increase the velocity of a projectile fired from a gun by use of the rocket principle. I made some calculations, which indicated that an increase in velocity of 500 to 1000 feet per second might well be achieved in this way. Since then I have learned that this suggestion has been made bother people, no doubt by many. the ideas to which I have finally been led seem, however, to be different from others on which work has been done, such as that of Sir Dennis Burney, who has made use of a finned projectile in a gun, and of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, which in 1935 and 1938 reported experiments on increasing the range of finned mortar projectiles with use of rocket propellant. Mr. Piestrak, who has suggested a rocket gun, may possibly have had a device in mind somewhat similar to mine.

  My proposal involves a charge of rocket propellant in a chamber at the rear of the projectile of a rifled gun, this chamber in the projectile being open to the gun chamber, and the rocket propellant being ignited at the same time as the gun propellant. The charge would weigh about 10 or 15% of the projectile weight, and would impart an added speed of 500 to 1000 feet per second to the projectile. Thus for th eM-3 or N-1A2 37 MM gun, giving muzzle velocity 2800 feet per second with the 1.92 lb. standard projectile and 3900 with the 0.95 lb. T24B3 projectile, a muzzle velocity as high as 4900 feet per second might be obtained with a one-pound projectile with the rocket propellant. I have examined rounds of ammunition for 37 MM cannon and have made preliminary designs of rocket projectiles.. A suitable rocket projectile might have the same size and shape as the M55A1 projectile, except that the taper at the base would not be present and the rotating band would be moved forward by 1 1/4 inches to a point 3 1/2 inches from the base. The rear 3 1/2 inches of the projectile would comprise the rocket motor, carrying 0.15 lb. of propellant, and the front 2 1/2 inches might consist of a tungsten carbide armor-piercing core and a windshield. The stability of this projectile in flight should be satisfactory. The charge of 0.15 lb. of propellant would give a velocity increment of 100 feet per second to the one-pound projectile. There is needed a propellant which can withstand

  the rotational and set-back forces (perhaps by being cemented to the chamber) and the high gun-chamber pressure of about 40000 psi. Whether an existing propellant can be used or a new propellant must be developed could be decided by a program of experimental work which would fit in well with our present NDRC program, if authorization to work on the development of this new weapon were given.

  It is important to note that the proposed change in the ammunition is simple, and that this method of obtaining hypervelocities would be applied to any cannon without any change whatever except in the ammunition. It is this latter feature of the proposed weapon, which it holds in common with the new light-weight armor-piercing projectile, which would make it especially liable to adoption by the armed services for use in this war.

  I have considered the various difficulties which suggest themselves and have reached the conclusion that there is a reasonable chance that they can be overcome. Most of these difficulties relate to the propellant.

  So far as I am aware, no work along these lines is being done by anyone, although some work is being done on other rocket-gun combinations. I do not know which division of the NDRC this proposal should be laid before. Would you please tell me to whom I should present this proposal in detail. I shall be in Washington for a Division 8 meeting on January 22, and plan to stay until the 25; this would give me the opportunity to discuss the proposal with the proper persons.

  I believe that, with the experience which we have had, we could answer the question as to whether the available rocket propellants could be used in this way in a short time, and at small cost.

  Dearest little Love:

  It is just noon on Wednesday, and we are passing the Arizona - New Mexico border, where there are the beautiful red cliffs shaped like docks. I wish you were here to see how the snow sets them off. There is only a few inches of snow, and the sun is shining brightly.

  Tell Peter we are still using a steam engine instead of a Diesel, and we are now about 2 ½ hours late - we should have been in Gallup, which we are approaching, two hours ago. I am a little worried about missing my train in Chicago - it leaves at 3 ¹⁵ and we are due in at 1 ⁴⁵ ; but perhaps we'll make up enough time for me to catch it.

  I went to bed early last night, and lay for a while in the dark looking out at the desert. I was too warm, and had to take off my longies & sleep in my pj's alone. I slept pretty well, and had breakfast at about 10. The man at my table recognized me - he is Homer Crotty, a trustee of Pomona and perhaps a CalTech Associate - a friend of Joe's, and ET Bell, Tolman, etc. We talked about Opler, a Gug. Fellow at Pomona, and about vitamins and other matters.

  I haven't anything to read, and there is nothing in the club car except one magazine - the Red Book - I could only get up courage to tackle one story, which was punk. I thought that James might give me a detective story, but he didn't. I've spent most of the time making calculations about my new weapon.

  If I has come on the Chief (which left Pasadena at noon) I would have had an extra half hour leeway between trains. But still I really needed Tuesday afternoon to get the important work done that was done.

  Dearest Paddy,

  The rain has finally caught up with us and is taking advantage of its tardy beginning. It has been a very cold day - Booooo! I meant to go to the sheriffs office in Altadena but didn't because it was too cozy inside.

  I made a wonderful pan of pecan rolls for supper. The children were gluttons. We had only vegetable soup and the rolls with milk so they ate their fill.

  This de Sale book is wonderful. How can a man be so brilliant and so lucid? It is a great pity that he has died. His loss is irreparable. Do you recall my saying that every truth - every philosophy every deed and concept built up by mankind during these centuries was against our losing this war? This man says that that is exactly what Germany intends to do if she can - to destroy utterly what mankind has striven these thousands of years to develop and nurture. They deny everything we know to be right and base everything on this brutal idea of force with reason totally annihilated. You are engaged in much more practical matters. How goes it? I have skipped over your stay in Pittsburgh, Washington, etc, although you are at this moment still on your way. I hope you've had a good and profitable journey.

  How is Moe? Give him my love and you would better tell him the "Foundation" story since I never seem to write. Still - you probably won't tell it very well.

  I have realized at this moment that you may not receive this if the air mail is as delayed going East as it is coming West.

  I hope you haven't been cold. It has been really chilly here yesterday and today.

  I have been thinking what a shame it is that all advice and poetry about love has do with the "Mistress lover" variety and none for the good old prosaic man and wife kind. Too bad - they are the ones who need it. but [sic] alas - the muses are not properly stimulated by the fillet - the hearth - the husband - !

  We are getting along well. The children are well and Petie has his hair cut. He and Linda and Crellie are all down here with me. Linus has gone back over to Flintridge to work on the Annual with Hubble — the editor.

  Dearest little sweetheart,

  I should be getting on my Washington train now - but we're still 50 miles from Chicago. We are running just two hours late. The main reason seems to be that we've had to come all the way with a steam engine, which can't get above 80 miles per hour (I've just timed it), instead of over 100, as do the Diesels. There is some snow out - perhaps 10 inches on the ground - but the sky is clear, as it has been all the way.

  The conductor has wired ahead to transfer my reservation to a later train. Perhaps I'll be off to Wn. by 4 15.

  I've spent most of the trip thinking over our life together - what a cute little girl you were and are, and how happy I've been with you all these years. I'll give you a good squeeze when I get home.

  I've had nothing to read. I got up late this morning, and as I went to breakfast I met Mr Crotty [?] leaving, who gave me his copy of the United States News, edited by David Lawrence I read it from cover to cover! And got only slightly mad.

  There are many big nests high up in the bare trees along in this Mississippi Valley region, and every once in a while there is a big owl, sitting perfectly still.

  I'm going to put in the time into Chicago making a calculation about my new proposal to Conant.

  Sunday, 8 ³⁰ PM

  Dearest little Sweetheart:

  I love you, darling girl. Tonight is the midpoint of my trip - from now on I'll be cutting down the last half, and I hope it goes fast.

  This morning at 7 ²⁰ I arrived in Washington. I ate breakfast at a cafeteria, and then phoned Milt and Dorcas, and took the bust out to their place, where I've been all day. Tomorrow morning I'll leave for my tour of Army, Navy, & NDRC, and then go to the Hendriks' at 6 ³⁰ for dinner, and at 10 ³⁰ on to New York.

  Milton & Dorcas are just the same as usual. I talked to them a long time about Mother Miller. Milt says that Clay must give an accounting, and he favors her going to a home and having an annuity. I'll tell you what he said when I get home.

  Dorcas mad a nice dinner at noon - cheese omelet for me - and we had waffles for supper. We've drunk some fruit juice, also a highball.

  To go back to the time of my last letter: The Superchief arrived in Chicago at 4 ¹⁵ , 2 1/2 hours late; I took a cab & rushed to the other station, & managed to catch the 4 ³⁰ train, not having a reservation;

  I got a lower, but the train was a slow train & also was late, so I arrived in Wn at 1 PM on Friday, missing my whole morning meeting. I went to the afternoon meeting - we had lunch first - Kisty, - Thorfin, La Mer, etc. Then at 4:30 Kisty & I & LH Adams had a conference with Conant about my latest suggestion. It was decided that some work be done on it. Then Kisty & Hammett & I all went to Pgh, where Hoard & Williams & the Bruseton [sic] boys took part in our conference. We went to Kisty's afterward for cocktails - his big daughter Vera was there - and then to the Prince Edward for dinner; Then Kisty & Vera went to hear the Don Cossacks and the rest of us went to Hammett's aptment [sic] for the evening, before catching our trains - mine left at 10 ³⁰ .

  The weather has been fine, not at all cold. The only cold night was Thursday night, from Chicago to W ⁿ . My two blankets and overcoat werent [sic] enough; but I could along

  nicely by wearing my longies, both pairs of pajamas, and three pairs of socks!

  I think that these meetings are necessary and worth while, but I don't like them. I'd prefer to stay at home with you - I love you, sweetie. I think that with our new information we can get some good work done - I hope James is satisfied.
