Dearest Love:
I was glad to get your letter, and Linda's & Crellie's. I sympathize with Linda - because over the Mojave it got rough, and then rougher - and soon I was breathing deeply & swallowing harder and harder. But I succeeded in keeping from coughing up, although I felt pretty sick all the way to Washington - so sick that I got my travel order changed to train travel. Also other plans our [sic] changed. Tomorrow I have NDRC conferences on the instrument, then Thursday morning to New York, seeing Boxorth at the new Bell Labs at Murray Hill in the afternoon, overnight with him, then to Picatinny Arsenal on Friday, overnight with Alfred & Reba, then a big meeting of Section B - Conant, GN Lewis, etc - in the Hotel Pennsylvania on Saturday, leaving that night for Chicago, and then home on the U.P. streamliner, arriving Tuesday morning.
I'll meet Thorfin Saturday. He leaves soon for London, where he'll be the liaison officer of Sec
n
[sic] B. I've seen Lot & Rody and Urey and others. Urey made an ass of himself at the Academy meeting - he said everyone knew that all the 1st rate & 2nd rate astronomers had been elected, & some of the 3rd " ones! So an astronomer got up and asked if perhaps one 4th rate chemist hadn't got in too! How's that?
I've had a good time with Miet & Dorcas. I've spent both evenings here - I didn't go to the smoker. I saw Tolman - he's very busy. Also Kossiakoff, now an Aide in " 's [sic] div
n
[sic]. Also Kisty - he's excited about the possibility of our coming to Bruceton. I've learned some interesting things about new developments along wartime lines.
Dorcas is still hard at her sewing. She now has 555 women to take care of.
I saw Dr Merritt, and Russell, & Cattell, all of whom asked about you. Also many others.
Jewett ran the Academy meetings very poorly. EB Wilson also did his bit to keep things muddled.
We are going to listen to the President's talk in five minutes, and then go to bed.
I love you, darling. Don't be lonesome. Don't feed Linda any more tuna. Keep Liny and Petey in hand. Be a good girl. Your own
