Professor Warren C. Johnson
Chemistry Department
University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Warren:
Yost tells me that you have in mind a possible project of the development of a scheme of qualitative and quantitative analysis of gases that might be met in the field, and that he has talked with you about Carl Niemann and Ernest H. Swift at this Institute. You know Swift's capabilities well enough. I want to assure you that Niemann is an extremely able young man. He is smart, well trained and full of energy. He has been giving courses here in semi-micro organic analysis and he knows the subject from the ground up. I think that this would be a first rate place for this work to be done. We have some well equipped organic laboratories which could be used for this work and some fresh young Ph.D.'s with experience in organic analysis who could serve as assistants. I hope that you will consider this Institute seriously as a place for this contract, in case that it is decided that the work is to be done.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
