  I am very sorry to learn of the accident to your eye, and I hope that you continue to improve.

  The list of equipment and apparatus which you sent to me will be very useful to us in the formulation of our application to the Rockefeller Foundation and especially, of course, in stocking the new laboratory. The Crellin Building is being constructed with surprising rapidity; concrete is now being poured on the third floor walls, and I expect that the roof will be poured in a couple of weeks.

  Our plans at present are to postpone decision about the appointment of a microanalyst until the professorial appointments in organic chemistry have been made, that is, until another staff member in addition to you has been appointed. We shall probably want to take up the question of the appointment of a microanalyst next spring or summer, and I hope that you will keep in touch with me concerning this. Could you give me some idea as to the salaries that Dr. Elek and the younger man you mention would be interested in? Do you think that it would be satisfactory for you to order the stock of special reagents that you need after you have taken up residence? In case that you desire an order to be placed before then, please send a list to me.

  I believe that at present you would not be able to find in Pasadena a young man with the experience in organic and biochemistry which would make him suitable as an assistant for you, and I suggest that during the next year you keep on the lookout for a suitable assistant. As I recall you were authorized to spend £1500.00 annually as salary for your assistant.

  I shall write to you later about the nature of the laboratories. The contract has already been let for the chemical desks, but not that for the furniture, including glass faced cases, and your suggestions with respect to this point would be useful. Dr. Buchman, who is here with an assistant, Dr. Richardson, to carry on his researches on analogs of vitamin B1 with the support of the Chemical Foundation, has made a study of the library and has prepared a list of old journals and of text and reference books of organic chemistry which are needed to make the library reasonably complete. After your arrival you may want to make some further suggestions.

  I am very much interesting to read about your results on Myocin. It seems to me that these experiments on thermal contraction provide a great deal of information about the nature of muscle contraction, and that you are now in a position by studying the phenomenon further to obtain more valuable information about the phenomenon.

  It is interesting that you have been able to oxidize the sulfhydryl groups in native egg albumin with iodine. I suppose that the steric protection afforded these groups by the configuration of the native molecule would have the effect of decreasing their activity so that they would be made resistant to attack by weaker oxidizing agents while still susceptible to stronger ones.

  We have had several visitors at the laboratory this summer, including Sidgwick of Oxford, who left day before yesterday after staying here for a week. Sidgwick told me that our paper on protein structure had aroused considerable interest at Oxford and that he and Robinson had asked Hopkins if the paper were sound on the biochemical side and that Hopkins had said that it was extremely good.

  There is great activity in the laboratory, with most of the research men still at work, and also on the campus, where the construction of the four new laboratories is proceeding rapidly. Concrete has been poured for the Crellin Laboratory completely except for the roof.

  I am looking forward to seeing you in New York at some time during the coming fall. U [sic] think that Helen will come with me to Ithaca for the month of October.

  The second and third floors of the new Crellin Laboratory, each with floor space 50x120' are assigned to work in organic chemistry. In addition a laboratory in the basement is assigned to microchemistry, and there is room in the pent house for large scale work.

  There are four large rooms, 20x50', at the ends of the two organic floors. One of these is assigned to undergraduate instruction in organic chemistry and the other three are available for graduate students carrying on research and perhaps for graduate instruction also. It is planned that the graduate students in organic chemistry be carefully selected and be restricted in number in the same way as the graduate students in physical chemistry. At present there are about twenty-five graduate students in chemistry, of whom about five work in the organic field. In addition to the stock room and fourteen general utility rooms, including cold room, machinery room, optical room, balance room, combustion room, small conference room, etc., there are three studies, about 8x16', and eight laboratories of varying size, in the main about 16x16'. I believe that the disposition of these rooms among the staff members will not be made until after completion of the building, and we can anticipate that readjustments will have to be made later. We have working in organic chemistry at present Professor Lucas, Dr. Koepfli, Dr. English, and Dr. Buchman with his assistant Dr. Richardson. Dr. Buchman has just come to Pasadena to carry on his research during the coming year on the synthesis of analogs of vitamin B1 with the support of the Research Corporation.

  In addition to these men and you and your assistant and students, it is possible that we shall have to make provision for Dr. A. R. Todd and his coworkers. Dr. Todd has not been offered a position on the staff, but he is coming here during the month of February to deliver a set of lectures, and there is some chance that he will remain permanently. I would be glad to know what your opinion of his work is. Moreover, I would like you to visit him in London (he is now at the Lister Institute) in order that you may make his personal acquaintance before he comes here.

  I am glad that you and Mrs. Klug are having a good time this summer at the lake. My wife and I have stuck pretty close to home except for her sojourn in the hospital. I don't remember whether I had told you about our new little boy, now two and a half months old. He is named Edward Crellin Pauling after Mr. Crellin, the donor of our now laboratory. The laboratory itself is rapidly approaching completion, the pouring of concrete for the pent house on the roof being under way at present.

  I am afraid that it may not be possible for me to stop off at Minneapolis on the way to or from Cornell. I am staying in Pasadena until the last moment in order that I can do my part to get the work of the fall term started, and I think that I shall probably have to return as rapidly as possible in February too. I have promised Glocker that I would stop at Minnesota some tine, and if it is possible to work the stop in on this trip, I shall do so.

  I have started to make a collection of photographs of the men who have worked in the laboratory, and I would be very glad to have one of you.
