Dr. Henry Eyring
Department of Chemistry
Princeton University
Princeton, New Jersey.
Dear Henry:
The Institute is without any funds at all for fellowships for Ph.Ds's, so that there is nothing than can be done for Hirschfelder in this regard. On the other hand, I have a research fund which can be used in particular for hiring research assistants, and if nothing else is available for Hirschfelder for next year, it might be possible to work with him on that. Because of the nature of the fund, it would be necessary for him to devote the larger fraction of his time to some problem of interest to us rather than necessarily to him, but he would be able to put in some of his time on his own work. The stipend would also not be very large. However, I do not want to be too optimistic regarding this, inasmuch as the funds are, to a large extent, earmarked for work of a particular type, and I cannot tell yet whether there will be any residue which can be used for theoretical work on the structure of molecules. I think that it will not be possible to make plans for next year until March. If Hirschfelder has not made some satisfactory arrangement by that time, he might well write to me in order to see what the situation is. Thanks very much for letting me know that he is looking for something,
With best wishes for the new year, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Ermon:
I have just received our manuscript from Urey together with a letter from him and a letter from Rodebush. I am sending all of the stuff to you to look over and decide what ought to be done and what you think the situation really is. It is a little hard for me to believe that the things that Rodebush said is his paper come so close to being identical with the things we said in ours as Rodebush says they do. On the other hand we should, of course, allow him the benefit of any doubt that there is. Possibly we should rewrite the introduction to say that Rodebush has recently discussed interpretations of the third law of thermo- dynamics in terms of the new quantum mechanics, and that we are presenting another discussion of essentially the same subject in order to clear up some questions which arose regarding the matter, with Rodebush agreeing with what we say. Probably a still better thing to do would be for you to include as much of this stuff as you want in your Chemical Reviews paper with a footnote saying that Rodebush agrees with your interpretation of the question and a statement, I suppose, that you are indebted to me for discussing it with you. In view of what Rodebush says, to wit, that he does agree with what we say and that there is no conflict between us, this latter procedure seems to me to be the desirable one.
Helen has returned from Oregon; in fact, she got back two days before Christmas. Her mother is feeling much better now and I hope that she will continue to improve. It is possible, however, that we may have to drive to Oregon during our spring vacation towards the end of March, in which ease we shall probably be too rushed to stop at Berkeley. I hope that the new semester is starting out well.
Yours,
Linus Pauling

Dearest Paddy:
I have just finished my work - supper - dishes - and a great lot of oat meal cookies. If you were here I might let you have one. I've decided to send some to James. He likes them so well and it is a shame that he should have them only once a year.
Little Crellie and I watched your train sail on out of sight then we drove home via New Oak [?] Avenue. I purchased a flat of verbena, too, and they are already in the ground. Linus is at a He Y [?] meeting
[2nd page]
2 - He said he didn't want to go but that he had to go. I said "Nonsense." Also that I wouldn't come and get him since I'm tired. I think I won't go. He wanted to stay overnight tomorrow night too, with the little [?] girl, I mean, but I said he couldn't that I would get him at eleven o'clock. He is a scheme all right and clever, too.
How are you? Dr Edsall called and invited me to their house tomorrow evening to meet some English people whom they met in Berkeley. I don't want to go very much but will go first for a little while to the folk dancing and

3 - then for a short while to the Edsalls'. Isn't it odd that he called?
This afternoon I called on the Tylers with Crellie and Linda while we waited for Peter. She was happy to see us and they have a charming little house and garden. It is too bad she hasn't some of Lena Weinbaums [sic] excess artistic talent.
Say do you realize you didn't give me your address in New York? How can I write to you? Such a fellow!
How is the little Paddy? You are a big joke.
A man called to ask if our property here for sale.

I said "No."
I suppose you think you are pretty smart don't you. Guggenheim Advisory Board. Fui! [sic] They ought to know who the Paddy Advisory Board is.
I'm going to read the paper in bed and I won't be bothered by any pestiferous Paddy either.
Love to you, Member of the Selection Board of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation — to say nothing about the Advisory Board.
