Letter from Linus Pauling to Oleg Jardetzky. December 3, 1956Pauling writes to communicate his ideas regarding the configuration of the water molecules. He states his belief that there is one common structure for water. Pauling continues to discuss ice and O-H bond lengths. He mentions possible structures and densities related to tridymite, or chlorine hydrate. After discussing this matter at length, he suggests that it would be worthwhile to check up on the X-ray diffraction of liquid water. Pauling ends his letter by proposing formulating a mathematical question in regards to what complexes of water can be formed to minimize the number of unformed hydrogen bonds.
