Letter from Linus Pauling to Peter Pauling. October 12, 1954

Pauling tells of his visit with Rosalind Franklin. Linus notes that she brought with her some x-ray photographs, which he enjoyed viewing. He mentions that he would like to do work similar to Franklin's on the x-ray crystallography of liquid material, except that his focus would be the tactoids formed by sickle-cell-anemia hemoglobin. Linus is not sure, however, if anyone in his department has the patience for the job. Pauling continues to discuss other aspects of doing research related to liquid crystals. He states that he and Ava Helen will be in Pasadena for most of the winter, and concludes by mentioning that he and Dr. Corey are disappointed that no one in the department knows how to work with crystalline proteins.  View Transcript
