Letter from Linus Pauling to Robert J. McPherson. December 9, 1947Pauling discusses the possibility of converting salt water to fresh water. He states that this conversion could be done cheaply through the use of atomic energy but mentions that this development is likely still a number of years away. Pauling also states that fresh water available for five cents a ton wouldn't be of interest in the Southern California region at present because it is already available at cheaper prices.
