Memorandum from Linus Pauling to George Beadle. July 18, 1955.
Pauling writes that he has prepared his nomination of Dr. Harvey A. Itano for the Theobald Smith Award for 1955. He wonders if Beadle would be willing to prepare a letter supporting the nomination, suggesting thta Beadle might include a statement of the high opinion in which Dr. Itano is held personally by members of the Division of Biology. Pauling requests seven signed copies of the letter and encloses a draft of the nomination that he has prepared, two copies of the memo and multiple copies of nomination drafts.

CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY INTER-OFFICE MEMO.

To G. W. Beadle FROM L. Pauling DATE 18 July 1955

SUBJECT Nomination of Harvey Itano

I have prepared a nomination of Harvey Itano for the Theobald Smith Award ($1000 and a bronz [sic] medal) which will be presented to someone during the Association's 122nd meeting, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, this December. Would you he willing to prepare a letter supporting the nomination, in which you stress the nominee's personality, training, and research work? I think that in particular a statement such as you have made to me orally about the high opinion in which Dr. Itano is held personally by members of your Division of Biology would be especially needed. I should like to have seven signed copies of your letter. I enclose a draft of the nomination that I have prepared.
