Title

Margaret Milliken Oral History Interview (2 of 2)

Description

Margaret Milliken describes dormitory life at Oregon State College from when she lived in Waldo Hall in the early 1940s, details the physical education program during that same period, and reflects on the local impact of World War II. From there, she talks about the Women's Athletic Association, outdoor clubs at OSC and the impact made by Dr. Eva M. Seen, who introduced recreational activities into the physical education department.

From there, Milliken touches on her interest in camping education and her experience in directing summer camps for girls. She then discusses her teaching career at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, Oregon; her motivation for taking a year break from teaching physical education to work for the Campfire Girls in Portland; her return to OSC in the late forties to work towards obtaining her Master's degree; the beginnings of the outdoor school program and the impact that it made on environmental awareness. The interview concludes with Milliken’s reflections on the major accomplishments of her life.
